Gary Neville says Liverpool’s thrashing of Man Utd was ‘epitomised’ by one ’embarrassing’ player
A furious Gary Neville has declared Manchester United were ‘never title contenders’ after being destroyed 7-0 by rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
This equals the Red Devil’s biggest-ever defeat, which last happened against Wolves in 1931. It was also their worst result to Liverpool in their history.
Neville criticised United’s captain Bruno Fernandes in particular, though, slamming his behaviour in the second half as ‘disgraceful.’
Speaking on Sky Sports, via BBC Sport, Neville said: “I have to say… what a shambles.
“Some of Fernandes’ behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace. He is holding his hands up asking why am I not coming off?
“Ten Hag has dealt with setbacks in the past but this is a big one. They have fallen to pieces, lost their heads, their shape and their discipline.”
When asked whether United could still challenge for the title, Neville added: “I never had them down as title holders.
“They have built up real trust but this is out of character. Hopefully, this is a one-off. A sore one. You don’t lose 7-0 as a Manchester United player.
“That first 40 mins was a classic away performance. The second half has been an absolute disgrace, a shambles, epitomised by captain Bruno Fernandes, who has been embarrassing at times.”

Roy Keane slams shameful United performance
Former Red Devil’s captain Roy Keane was equally frustrated by the performance, echoing Neville’s reaction to an ’embarrassing’ showing at Anfield.
Keane said: “A shocking day. The senior players were embarrassing. They didn’t show any leadership skills.
“A really tough day for Man Utd and thank goodness I have never been part of losing like that. The players will be ashamed. They went missing.”
“When United come to Anfield all logic goes out of the window. It is the hardest place to come – they didn’t show any pride or fight.
“Liverpool were absolutely amazing though, their desire, their energy. Liverpool were back to their very best but it was an embarrassing day for United.
“I never thought United were back to their very best. They have been giving teams chances but today Liverpool didn’t let them off the hook.
“They were clinical and ruthless and kept going.
“The senior players for Manchester United are the ones who let the club down today. As a player, you would go into hiding. It is embarrassing for the players.”
Indeed, it will be a big challenge for Erik ten Hag to get United to bounce back quickly, with a crucial Europa League tie against Real Betis coming up on Thursday.
