George Williams has backed England to play more international tests ahead of their game against the Combined Nations All Stars.

The 27-year-old has won 10 caps for England to date, as well as featuring in the World Cup Nines Down Under in 2019.

He has once again been called up to represent his country this weekend against the All Stars at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

It’s the first time England will play this year, and only the third time since the pandemic. Wane fell to a defeat against the All Stars in his first game in charge last year, before defeating France 30-10 last October.

And Warrington’s number seven Williams has backed the sport to include more international games.

He told Love Rugby League: “100%. Everybody wants to watch it, all the players want to play in it, it makes sense. It’s the pinnacle to play for your country, so it’s a no-brainer for us players.

“The biggest thing you can do is to represent your country.

“I’m sure everyone that got the phone call was buzzing and I’m like everyone else.”

Williams reunites with former Wigan head coach Shaun Wane, who handed him his first team debut back in 2013.

The pair went on to win the 2016 and 2018 Grand Finals, and the 2017 World Club Challenge together with the Warriors.

Williams has been selected in the halves alongside Jack Welsby to face Ellery Hanley’s All Stars this Saturday.

“He gave me my opportunity at first team,” Williams said on Wane.

“I’ll always be grateful for that. He’s taught me a lot over the years and we’ve won trophies together. There’s a lot of trust there and a strong relationship.

“If you look at the strength of the All Stars, it’s really strong. It will be a great test for us on the weekend.

“I think it’s good for the game in general. It gets people watching their country, everybody likes watching England and hopefully it will be a good game.”
