Georgia Tech's best offensive player is heading to Alabama.

After entering the transfer portal earlier this offseason, Jahmyr Gibbs said Tuesday that he would be transferring to Alabama.

Gibbs was Georgia Tech’s leading rusher with 143 carries for 746 yards and four touchdowns in 2021. He was also the team’s third-leading receiver with 35 carries for 465 yards and two touchdowns. Despite being a running back, he was second on the team in yards per catch at 13.3.

Gibbs rushed for 460 yards on 89 carries as a freshman in 2020 and figures to be an important part of the backfield for the Crimson Tide in 2022. Senior Brian Robinson is the team’s leading rusher in 2021 and there will likely be an open competition to replace him in 2022.

A native of Dalton, Georgia, Gibbs was recruited to Georgia Tech by former GT running back and current RB coach Tashard Choice. He was one of the best signees in the team’s 2020 class as a four-star prospect and the No. 2 all-purpose back in the country, according to Rivals. The only player ranked ahead of Gibbs in the category was Texas’ Bijan Robinson.

Gibbs is also the second key transfer Alabama has added in recent days. LSU transfer cornerback Eli Ricks said last week that he was heading to Tuscaloosa in 2022. The Crimson Tide have always recruited high schoolers well under Nick Saban and are proving to be solid in the transfer market too. Linebacker Henry To'o To'o and wide receiver Jameson Williams have played pivotal roles for Alabama in 2021 after transferring from other schools.
