While ex-Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger is now free of his DTM commitments, he has his doubts on a Formula 1 return.

Berger enjoyed a highly successful career racing in the series, winning 10 grands prix across stints with Benetton, Ferrari and McLaren. His career in Formula 1 ran between 1984-1997, with this the final series which he competed in as a racer.

He also remained involved in the series after his racing days were finished, serving as competitions director at BMW as he oversaw their return to F1, he was also part-owner of the Toro Rosso team and president of the FIA Single-Seater Commission for a time.

And now technically the 63-year-old Austrian is back on the market, having overseen the sale of the series from now former promoter ITR to ADAC, Berger having served as ITR chairman.

But, that does not mean that he has his eye on a new Formula 1 project, even if the series is perhaps at the height of its popularity right now.

Instead, he now wants to put family time first and see his young children grow up.

“There were considerations, then I would have had to arrange my life differently again,” he told Speedweek.com. “The young children play an important role.

“I want to take my six-year-old son to his first kart races and my nine-year-old daughter to go horse riding. I want to have more time for them.”

Berger though was not necessarily the one who was initiating fleeting thoughts of a return to Formula 1, with Berger confirmed that “several requests” had come his way, and certainly not all of them were easy to dismiss.

But, he intends on sticking to the life that he has planned post-DTM and a role is yet to come up in Formula 1 which would not interfere with that.

“There were several requests, all of them were super interesting, but as I said, they didn’t fit into my life planning,” Berger affirmed.
