Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is to play at Anfield again after signing up for a legends match against Real Madrid next month.

Gerrard’s last appearance at the ground ended in a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2015 as he left that summer to join Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy.

Having returned home in November following the expiration of his contract he has since taken up a youth coach role at the club’s academy and has been a regular visitor to Anfield as a spectator.

Gerrard has now joined a host of former players – like Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher – in agreeing to play in a charity match on March 25.

“I’m really looking forward to playing in the LFC Foundation Legends Charity match – Anfield will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s a real honour to be sharing the pitch with such a great team of legends whilst raising money for the club’s official charity,” said Gerrard

All proceeds from the match will support the foundation’s charity’s programmes and partnerships, which aim to improve the health and life chances of children and young people in Merseyside and beyond.

“I have been to a lot of games of late and I am absolutely steaming to get out there and play,” Gerrard added on LFC TV.

“There’s no better feeling for me. I’ve often been asked the question what has been the best buzz of my career and it was always running out at Anfield in front of a full house.”
