Ghana 2-3 Comoros LIVE! Black Stars out - AFCON 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Ghana vs Comoros - LIVE!

Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to a humiliating end as they were beaten 3-2 by debutants Comoros to finish bottom of Group C with just a single point.

El Fardou Ben Mohamed scored Comoros’ first ever goal at the tournament before Ahmed Mogni added a second just past the hour-mark.

Goals from Richmond Boakye and Alexander Djiku levelled the game up for Ghana, but Mogni grabbed a winner with five minutes remaining to end any hopes of a miraculous comeback.

It is the first time in their history that Ghana have failed to win at least one group stage match in 22 appearances at the finals, and their cause was not helped by playing for 65 minutes with 10 men after a harsh red card for Andrew Ayew.

Morocco topped Group C with seven points, followed by Gabon on five, who also advance to the second round. Comoros have an outside chance of being among the best third-placed finishers, though their minus two goal-difference will likely count against them.

Match report...

22:25 , Matt Verri

Ghana finished bottom of Group C as they crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations with a shock 3-2 defeat to Comoros despite threatening a thrilling comeback.

El Fardou Ben Nabouhane scored Comoris’ first ever AFCON goal after just four minutes, before Andre Ayew was unfortunate to be shown a red card for a challenge on the goalkeeper.

That left Ghana with it all to do, and it got worse for the Black Stars when Ahmed Mogni doubled the lead after an hour. Richmond Boakye got one back for his side, before Alexander Djiku equalised to give Ghana real hope.

But Mogni grabbed his second on the break as Comoros condemned Ghana to their first group-stage exit at the tournament since 2006.

Thomas Partey will soon be on his way back to north London to join up against with Arsenal.

With the Gunners having their match against Tottenham postponed last weekend, the midfielder could return without missing a single Premier League match.

For now though, Partey’s focus will be on a massively disappointing AFCON exit.

Night to remember for Comoros...

21:13 , Matt Verri

21:09 , Matt Verri

The last time Ghana were knocked out in the group stages? 2006.

They at least one a match that year, but finished third in the group with three points.

It’s no wins and just a single point this time. Painful exit for the Black Stars.

21:02 , Matt Verri

It finished level between Morocco and Gabon in the over match, a 2-2 draw.

That means Morocco go through as group winners with seven points, Gabon as runners-up with five. Comoros have three points and will have to wait and see if that is enough to earn them a spot as one of the best third-placed teams.

For Ghana though, they’re heading home.

The goal that sent Ghana out...

FULL-TIME

20:52 , Matt Verri

GHANA ARE OUT!

Comoros have an incredible 3-2 victory. They hadn’t scored an AFCON goal before tonight... they have three now!

Ghana finish bottom of the group and crash out of the group stages. Andre Ayew’s red card a huge turning point.

Black Stars threatened a late comeback, but they couldn’t quite pull it off. Brilliant match.

20:50 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Kyereh with a free-kick. He’s already had one saved from this position. Can he do better this time?

He tried, but blazed over the bar.

20:48 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Or not - just the four minutes added on. Ghana did not want to see that.

Black Stars are hardly leaving anyone back. A fourth goal is there to be had for Comoros.

20:46 , Matt Verri

89 mins: Comoros making three substitutes. Being done at walking pace.

We’ll surely get at least six minutes of added time, but that is likely not enough for Ghana now.

GOAL! Ghana 2-3 Comoros | Ahmed Mogni 85'

20:43 , Matt Verri

Incredibly open match. Ghana leaving four up front, but Comoros still flooding bodies forward as they try and snatch a winner.

Ghana have got to find another goal or they will be head out. BUT IT’S COMOROS WHO HAVE THE LEAD!

And that must be it for Ghana! Youssouf gets forward to the byline, drills a ball into the box and Mogni turns it in from close range. Astonishing match.

20:39 , Matt Verri

82 mins: Comoros have the ball in the net, but the whistle was blown well before. Offside flag is up.

That’s a really poor decision, the Comoros player was in his own half. Whistle went too early to allow VAR to check it though.

20:36 , Matt Verri

79 mins: But now Comoros are back on the attack, it’s end-to-end.

Space for the shot in the box, but it’s blocked behind. Corner. Wonderful delivery and it’s nearly straight in!

Wollacott with some dreadful goalkeeping and nearly lets it straight through.

GOAL! Ghana 2-2 Comoros | Alexander Djiku 76’

20:34 , Matt Verri

GHANA ARE LEVEL!

The ten-men are not giving up on this! They need one more in the final 15 minutes.

Partey flicks the corner on, and Djiku has a tap in at the back post. What a turnaround.

20:33 , Matt Verri

75 mins: It’s a foul a minute now, Comoros just doing anything to try and slow Ghana down. Can the Black Stars make the most of these set-pieces?

Kyereh to whip this one in. Goes for goal, and it’s arrowing into the top corner before Ahamada tips it over.

20:30 , Matt Verri

73 mins: Ghana racking up the corners now. Taken short to Jordan Ayew, who twists away from his man and tries to fire it across the face of goal. Behind for another corner.

Ayew screaming for handball... definitely not. Deeper ball this time, and the goalkeeper has to dive to tip it away under the bar.

20:28 , Matt Verri

71 mins: 20 yards out... is it too close for the midfielder?

Drilled low, and it may well have struck a Ghana player. Partey didn’t catch it at all.

20:27 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Free-kick Ghana... this is in Thomas Partey range.

Everything seems to be in his range, but this really is. He’s lining this one up carefully.

20:25 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Ghana piling the pressure on now, and Jordan Ayew does well to win a corner for his side.

Taken to the near post, Comoros clear it away and they also win the free-kick. Chance for them to slow things down.

GOAL! Ghana 1-2 Comoros| Richmond Boakye 64’

20:22 , Matt Verri

WELL THEN! Ghana aren’t done yet!

Corner swung in, goalkeeper doesn’t get there and Boakye, just off the bench, loops a header into the top corner.

Game on?!

GOAL! Ghana 0-2 Comoros | Ahmed Mogni 62'

20:19 , Matt Verri

Partey with his fourth shot of the match, and they must be from an average of 30 yards out. This one is also blocked.

Comoros bring it forward, brilliant cross into the box but it runs through to the far post.

Played back to Ahmed Mogni who twists and turns on the edge of the box, finds some space and then fires it in with a wonderful strike.

Ghana’s hopes done?

20:16 , Matt Verri

59 mins: Partey must be offside... and eventually the flag goes up.

Ayew holds it up well and swivels into space. Takes too long to play it through to the midfielder though, and when he does Partey is beyond the Comoros defence.

20:15 , Matt Verri

57 mins: Comoros have a man down in the Ghana box. Youssouf to be in a fair bit of pain, went down off the ball.

Might have twisted something in the pitch, looks like he might be stretchered off.

20:11 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Issakahu drives inside and tries to lay it off to the edge of the box. His teammates weren’t expecting that though.

Another cross into the box headed away. Comoros dealing well with the aerial threat.

20:09 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Both teams fancying themselves from long-range free-kicks.

Thomas Partey has been shooting at will, and it’s Comoros’ turn this time. Again it’s into the wall. Nearly deflects into a dangerous position, but Ghana get it clear.

20:07 , Matt Verri

50 mins: Jordan Ayew delays the cross and sees the chance go, but he wins a corner.

Deep towards Djiku, and he can only get a flick on it which sends it away.

20:04 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Kyereh sends a free-kick short to Partey, who clips it into the box.

Issahaku brings it down, gets the shot away and it’s deflected behind for a corner. Bright start from Ghana.

20:02 , Matt Verri

Addo on for Ghana, replacing Baba. Looks like a change of shape.

Back underway!

19:59 , Matt Verri

Elsewhere in the group, Gabon lead Morocco 1-0 thanks to Jim Allevinah’s goal.

That’s all irrelevant to Ghana though. Their focus is fully on turning this one around, which is no simple task. If they want to remain in the tournament, they’re going to have to find a way.

What a moment for Comoros...

19:54 , Matt Verri

19:50 , Matt Verri

So then, Ghana are heading out of the tournament and finishing bottom of Group C as it stands.

Gabon top of the group with seven points, Morocco with six, Comoros with three and Ghana with just a single point.

That can all still change, but it’s a huge ask for the ten-men to turn this one around.

19:47 , Matt Verri

45+2 mins: Comoros consider going to the corner to see the half out, but they eventually decide to attack. Lovely chip over the top to Selemani, he lays it back to the edge of the box... M’Changama sends it out for a throw-in with his shot.

And that’s half-time!

19:46 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Two minutes added on at the end of the half.

Ghana corner, but Ahamada out to claim and he drops to his knees. Will take his time before kicking this up the pitch.

19:44 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Comoros on the attack and Selemani very nearly threads a lovely ball through to Ben, but he can’t quite bring it under his control.

Ghana break, passed out wide to Sulemana who curls a strike at goal first time. Good save, but the winger was offside anyway.

19:43 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Ghana starting to sustain the attacks and put the Comoros defence under real pressure.

Another free-kick. Is it going to be a third attempt from Partey? This one is miles out, but once again he decides to go for goal. Straight into the wall.

19:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Ayew pulled back and he wins a free-kick 20 yards out. Good position.

Partey to take again... SO CLOSE! Looked like it was in, but it crashes into the side-netting. Brilliant effort from the Arsenal midfielder.

19:38 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Decent effort from Issahaku as he comes inside and gets a shot away with his left foot, but comfortable enough save for Ahamada, the substitute goalkeeper.

Issahaku has probably been Ghana’s brightest player so far, but end product hasn’t quite been there.

19:36 , Matt Verri

35 mins: Nearly an opening for Ghana, as Issahaku finds himself free after winning it back off M’Dahoma. Cleared out for a corner.

Initial cross is not a good one, and then Issahaku can then only poke it through to the goalkeeper.

19:33 , Matt Verri

33 mins: Ghana have barely had a touch since that red card, it’s given Comoros a real boost of confidence.

Sulemana loses it and the green shirts can flood forward again. Youssouf goes for maximum power with the cross, and it’s straight out of play.

19:31 , Matt Verri

30 mins: Long ball up to Jordan Ayew, but he can’t hold it up and Comoros have it back. They look comfortable just passing it around in defence.

Ghana just playing with one up front now, in Ayew. 4-4-1.

19:28 , Matt Verri

28 mins: Boina has gone off, the injury means he can’t continue.

What do Ghana do now? Really harsh decision, but they need to put it behind him and find two goals to turn this match around.

They’re in huge danger of finishing bottom of the group.

ANDRE AYEW SENT OFF!

19:26 , Matt Verri

25 mins: This is a long check. Surely won’t be a red cad, Ayew was sliding in and was very close to getting the ball but then caught Boina.

HE’S OFF! GHANA’S CAPTAIN IS OFF!

The task gets even more difficult.

19:24 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Boina is in a lot of pain, in goal for Comoros after that collision with Andre Ayew. Not sure he’s going to be able to continue.

VAR has told the referee to go and look at the monitor. Is Ayew going to be in real trouble here?

19:22 , Matt Verri

21 mins: Ball breaks to Issahaku and he has space to drive into. Goes for an early shot though, and it’s straight into the defender.

Jordan Ayew brings it down the left wing, lays it inside to Sulemana. Strikes it well, and the goalkeeper fumbles it. Andre Ayew goes sliding in to try and turn home the rebound, but he fouls the goalkeeper in doing so.

19:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Good from Andre Ayew, jinks past M’Dahoma and gets to the byline.

Cuts it back... but the ball just went out before he could play the pass. Ghana need to keep giving the ball to him though.

19:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Sulemana has it just outside the box, he cuts inside and has an effort at goal. Straight at Boina.

Ghana very much on top since falling behind, but they haven’t been able to create a clear-cut chance yet. Only going to get more nervy as the match goes on...

19:15 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Long throw from Ghana, and it drops to Andre Ayew in the box.

Swivels and tries to get an effort away, but scuffs it badly and there’s no power on the shot at all.

19:14 , Matt Verri

14 min: Djiku fouls Youssouf, as he goes up to challenge a long ball forward. Comoros already in no rush to take any set pieces.

Nice ball into the box eventually comes in, just evades Selemani at the back post.

The midfielder is then shown a yellow card as he drags back Kyereh. He’s complaining, but it wasn’t a very subtle foul.

19:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Comoros have already given away a number of free-kicks, and Partey is the latest to be brought down.

The Arsenal man is eyeing this up from 35 yards out. Hasn’t shown much goalscoring form for the Gunners, but his record is much better for Ghana.

Into the wall and deflected away.

19:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Ghana look vulnerable on the counter, Djiku this time having to get across to stop the break.

So much space for Comoros when they play a quick ball forward.

19:07 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Ghana need to get themselves back into this quickly. Already a nervy enough situation as it is.

Free-kick for them, and it’s clipped to the far post by Ayew. Headed back into the box but Comoros clear. What a start for them.

GOAL! Ghana 0-1 Comoros | Ben Nabouhane 4'

19:04 , Matt Verri

COMOROS LEAD!

Their first ever AFCON goal, and now Ghana are in real trouble!

Comoros break and there’s so much space for them. Dreadful defending. Nabouhane lets fly from the edge of the box, great finish into the bottom corner. Keeper didn’t move.

19:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Early free-kick for Ghana, put into the box by Issahuku.

Low cross, gets flicked on at the near post and bounces dangerously, but Comoros have enough bodies back to get it clear.

KICK-OFF!

19:00 , Matt Verri

Here we go then, Comoros get us underway!

18:58 , Matt Verri

National anthems done, it’s time for the final Group C matches.

Plenty of experience in the Ghana side, which will help them in a match that has so much riding on it.

Plenty of excitement in the stands...

18:55 , Matt Verri

18:54 , Matt Verri

Players are out onto the pitch, almost time get underway in Group C.

Ghana the favourites to win tonight, but with the pressure of it being a must-win clash on them, it’s unlikely to be simple.

They could really do with a comfortable night to boost their goal difference, and get the edge if they do go through as a best third-placed team.

18:48 , Matt Verri

Elsewhere in the group this evening, Gabon face Morocco. Kick-off in that one is also in about 15 minutes.

Gabon will be without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who missed he game against Ghana after a scan revealed he had “cardiac lesions”.

The issue, which has also affected former Fulham midfielder Mario Lemina, is believed to have arisen after Aubameyang tested positive for Covid-19 when arriving in Cameroon for AFCON earlier this month.

Gabon have now decided it is safest to send Aubameyang back to Arsenal for further tests and the club are in touch to learn more about the forward’s health issues.

A lot of pressure on the Ayew brothers once again, as Ghana try and dig themselves out of this hole and secure their place in the last 16.

Andre Ayew has his country’s only goal of the tournament so far - they’re going to need to improve on that tonight.

Malawi and Zimbabwe have pulled off some impressive results to end their group.

Rajevac: No complacency from the Black Stars

17:22 , Marc Mayo

Ghana boss Milovan Rajevac has insisted his side are going into today’s game with a completely serious mindset, despite facing unfancied Comoros.

He told reporters: “As you can see in this tournament there are no big teams and we don’t have to underestimate Comoros or any team in the tournament.

“We have seen some of the results here and we have to approach this match like we are playing against Brazil or when somebody is playing against Real Madrid. We have to concentrate, focus throughout the match and we are all aware that we have to do well throughout the match.”

Group C set for big finish

17:12 , Marc Mayo

It is going to be a nervy night for Ghana with one eye on Gabon’s game against Morocco in Yaounde.

The Atlas Lions are into the last-16 after two wins and could rest their players for the match, against second-placed Gabon.

Following the exits of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina from their camp, Gabon could suffer from the disruption but will probably go through even as a third-placed team.

A draw will guarantee both nations’ progression as top-two qualifiers, leaving Ghana needing a win to help their chances - and even then facing a tough knockout tie.

Elsewhere in AFCON today

17:02 , Marc Mayo

The second-half is just about to kick off in both Group B deciders.

Malawi are holding their own against Senegal, with that one goalless, while Zimbabwe are on the verge of a big win over Guinea.

Knowledge Musona and Kudakwashe Mahachi have both scored to give the side rooted bottom of the table the lead, although it may not be enough to seal a spot in the last-16 after two earlier defeats for Zimbabwe.

It means Senegal currently sit top on five points, ahead of Guinea and Malawi on four.
