West Ham can expect to wrap up the transfer of Gianluca Scamacca in the coming days after Sassuolo chief executive Giovanni Carnevali revealed exact details of their agreement with the Hammers.

David Moyes’ side have been chasing a new centre forward since offloading Sebastien Haller to Ajax in January 2021. Indeed, three trasnsfer windows have passed since then, with their fruitless search exemplified by Haller since proving his worth and recently moving to Borussia Dortmund.

As such, the Hammers have had to persist with just Michail Antonio as a sole central striking option. And there are some who feel that lack of strength in depth proved decisive as West Ham fell short in their quest to claim a top-four finish.

However, they are close to finally addressing their need for a new striker with a deal to sign Scamacca.

They first made contact with Sassuolo back in June, though his huge asking price appeared prohibitive to any deal.

And PSG’s pursuit of the player then further complicated matters, giving West Ham further cause for concern.

But it seems their patience has finally paid off with reports on Friday claiming an agreement has been reached for Scamacca.

The Italy striker has also already agreed personal terms, meaning his transfer should now be straight forward to finalise.

Confirming the imminent deal, Sassuolo CEO Carnevali has confirmed the sale to il Corriere dello Sport.

Speaking while isolating from a bout of Covid-19, Carnevali says Scamacca will travel to London for a medical in the next few days.

He’s also confirmed the finer details of the fee his side will receive for their prized asset.

“I am at home with Covid, and for the second time in a few months. The first, between December and January, while we were selling [Jeremie] Boga at Atalanta; I was positive for 27 days. To think, the virus came back just in the days when we gave Scamacca to West Ham,” he commented.

Commenting on the fee they will receive, he added: “€22m Boga, €36m plus €6m bonuses and 10 per cent on resale for Scamacca. Sounds good to me, right? Also, because West Ham are a selling club,” Carnevali added, suggesting they can bank further down the line when Scamacca too also departs the London Stadium.

That means the Hammers are paying an initial £30.6m for Scamacca. A further £5.1m in add-ons will take the total deal to £35.7m.

The striker bagged 16 goals in 36 Serie A appearances last season. The striker also has seven caps for Italy, though he is yet to score on the international scene.

West Ham can be happy at transfer agreement

Nonetheless, Moyes will be delighted his long hunt for a striker is set to end.

Scamacca has all the assets required to succeed in the Premier League. Standing at an imposing 6ft 5in, he is another tall player to join the Hammers’ ranks.

Powerfully built, West Ham will be confident the player can score plenty of goals in the Premier League.

And while questions have been raised that he has what it takes to succeed playing for Italy, Carnevali is convinced West Ham have the future of the Azzurri attack.

“He is the present and the future of Italy, a complete striker. Scamacca has improved a lot in the last year, he still has untapped potential,” Carnevali explained.

“He has physical structure, technique, he must learn to play more with his teammates. And he has an extraordinary shot, when he kicks it the ball has a different sound. Gianluca Scamacca is also a great guy, very good.”

The Hammers also hope to soon add Filip Kostic to their ranks with transfer talks reportedly progressing well.
