Glasgow trounce Cardiff to go third

Glasgow trounce Cardiff

Glasgow Warriors 31-3 Cardiff Blues

Glasgow maintained their charge for the play-off places with a scintillating 31-3 home victory over a shell-shocked Cardiff Blues side at Firhill Arena.

A brace from Ryan Wilson and further tries from Chris Fusaro and Colin Shaw also secured a vital bonus point, with the rest of the hosts' points coming from the respective right boots of Duncan Weir and Ruaridh Jackson.

In reply, a Cardiff side littered with international stars could only muster one Leigh Halfpenny penalty, as the Warriors continued their impressive home form in emphatic style.

Edinburgh 26-23 Scarlets

Edinburgh posted their first league win in nine matches when they took the honours in a rousing 26-23 victory over Scarlets at Murrayfield that featured several passages of exhilarating rugby and three yellow cards.

A touchdown by Dave Denton and a penalty try, plus a string of kicks by skipper Greig Laidlaw saw the hosts home against a Welsh outfit that had tries from Andy Fenby and Jonathan Davies plus an 11-point haul from the boot of Rhys Priestland and one conversion by Stephen Jones.

Ulster 45-7 Aironi Rugby

Ulster bolstered their hopes for a PRO12 League play-off place by notching up a seventh win from their last eight outings with a 45-7 victory over Aironi that gives them the perfect boost ahead of their Heineken Cup quarter-final with Munster.

However, the six-try win may have come at a cost as star flanker Stephen Ferris was helped off with an ankle injury just after the half-hour mark and he could be a doubt for the Munster clash.

Paddy Wallace, Rory Best, Darren Cave, Tom Court, and Pedrie Wannenburg crossed over for the home side with Ruan Pienaar and Ian Humphreys adding the extras. While Tito Tebaldi scored a try for Aironi in the first half as Naas Oliver kicked the conversion.

Newport Gwent Dragons 19-27 Connacht

Wing Fetu'u Vainikolo dashed over for a brace of tries as Connacht closed the gap on Italians Treviso with an excellent 27-19 away RaboDirect Pro12 victory over Newport Gwent Dragons.

Connacht have been the perennial poor relations to Ireland's big three provinces but they looked anything but that at Rodney Parade where a top first-half performance was the deciding factor of the match.

Vainikolo crossed in both halves, with stand-off Miah Nikora booting 17 points against a Toby Faletau try and kicks from outside half Lewis Robing and replacement Adam Hughes.
