Manchester United have endured a miserable season in 2021/22, with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his successor Ralf Rangnick failing to get the most out of an undeniably talented squad. The Red Devils ultimately ended up finishing sixth, albeit only due to West Ham's slip up against Brighton in the final game of the season. But while the performances on the pitch have warranted criticism, much of the supporter frustration is aimed upstairs at the owners of the club.

The Glazer family took ownership 17 years ago in 2005, and their day-to-day running of the club has faced plenty of criticism from fans, former players and pundits.

Protests against their ownership have always existed throughout their tenure, but have ramped up in recent seasons due to their continuous financial withdrawals from the club and their participation in the organisation of the failed Super League proposals. But Manchester United chairman Avram Glazer launched a staunch defence of his family's ownership during a rare interview about the Red Devils' recent season. The 61-year-old American started by labelling the season as "disappointing". "It's a disappointing season for everyone and we're going to work hard to make next season a better season." When asked whether the club could see significant investment in the summer, Avram replied "We've always spent the money necessary to buy new players." Finally, with Erik ten Hag the man chosen to spearhead United's rebuild in the coming years, Glazer was asked whether the Dutch manager will be a success at Old Trafford.

"That's why we hired him, we know he'll do a great job," he replied. Ten Hag started work in his new role on Monday, and gave his first press conference since becoming Manchester United manager. The 52-year-old will now use the summer break to strengthen the squad, before the start of the new Premier League season in August.
