If You’re Going With Experience, It Makes Absolute Sense That You Play Ravichandran Ashwin – Aakash Chopra On T20 World Cup Squad

Aakash Chopra has stated that the selection of Ravichandran Ashwin was the right decision as his T20 stats are very good. It also makes sense considering the only other right-arm off-spinner Washington Sundar is unavailable owing to an injury.

Team India has included as many as five spinners for the T20 World Cup set to take place in the UAE. Alongside Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Rahul Chahar, and Varun Chakravarthy have also been named. Chopra believes the management made the right call to bring in someone of Ashwin’s calibre and experience.

As many as five spinners. Ravichandran Ashwin coming back is absolutely the right decision because Washi is not there. His T20 numbers are very good. So if you are going with experience, it makes absolute sense that you play Ashwin.

Ashwin’s comeback has not surprised me at all but it would have been good if he had been made to play a little lately. But the sort of senior player he is, you can take a chance with him in the World Cup. I am absolutely on board with that,” Chopra mentioned.

Aakash Chopra’s opinion on the rest of the spinners

The thought process behind Team India selecting five spinners is solely down to the UAE pitches. They are generally slow and low which will bring the slow-arm tweakers into play early on. Adding to that, the IPL 2021 will be held there so the pitches might be weary right from the start. Speaking on the spinners in the squad, Chopra said:

Axar Patel is a bit of a surprise package. You can play only one out of him and Jaddu, both are similar. I am very happy for Rahul Chahar because he has been doing very well, so he has been fast-tracked a little.

You have given yourself a mystery spinner in the form of Varun Chakravarthy, a spinner whom no one has seen. Although his Sri Lankan outing was middling, but it is okay, you can take a chance.

All the spinners involved are front-line options for their IPL teams. Therefore, they will be able to adapt to the UAE conditions much faster. India plays its first match against Pakistan on October 24 in Dubai.
