Golden Globes fashion moments: Looking back at red carpet style in recent years

The 2020 Golden Globes are almost upon us, and we have high expectations for red carpet fashion.

It's been an up-and-down few years in Hollywood, and we've seen the effects on the red carpet. In 2018, we saw an intentionally muted style guide at the Globes: Nearly every star, male or female, wore black in solidarity with the women who have faced sexual mistreatment in the entertainment industry.

But as the dust settled, 2019 brought the return of bold colors and standout style moments. Glitter was in no short supply as stars like Regina King, Timothee Chalamet and Nicole Kidman all arrived in glitzy ensembles. Julia Roberts donned a caped pantsuit and Anne Hathaway rocked a mixed animal print.

Okay, let's keep the look-backs going. 2018 proved that black dresses definitely don't have to be boring! Sequins and sparkle were at an appropriate minimum, but not everyone kept things conservative: Sheer black gowns were a recurring trend, with Halle Berry, Catherine Zeta-Jone and Issa Rae among the actresses who dared to show some skin.

In other words, it was a major contrast from the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet, where we saw bold patterns, low-cut necklines and a surprising amount of yellow. In case you need a memory refresh:

2016 featured some more scandalous looks, like Kate Hudson's: The star wore a two-piece gown featuring a tiny skintight crop top. Jennifer Lawrence also flashed a bit of midriff in a draped crimson gown.
