It was only Petterson’s second Major victory of her career, adding to her 2007 LPGA Championship triumph.

She began the day tied with New Zealand’s Ko for second and sat one shot behind overnight leader Mika Miyazato of Japan. But Miyazato collapsed to a round of 79 to leave Pettersen to contest the title with Ko.

A string of birdies edged the Norwegian ahead and although she drove into the trees off the 17th, she managed to recover and hold on to top the leaderboard after the three-round tournament.

Ko finished eight-under overall with America’s Lexi Thompson two shots further back in third.

The 72-hole event was cut by 18 holes after heavy rain washed out play on day one.
