Thomas wins $10 million bonus as FedExCup champion

(Reuters) - American Justin Thomas was crowned FedExCup champion on Sunday, claiming a $10 million bonus for winning the season-long points race on the PGA Tour. By finishing second at the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, Thomas overtook countryman Jordan Spieth in the Cup standings. Thomas, 24, won five times this season, including his first major at the PGA Championship. He carded a closing 66 on Sunday, but was edged for the tournament victory by one stroke by PGA Tour rookie Xander Schauffele, who birdied the final hole to shoot 68 and finish at 12-under-par 268. "It’s a really weird day, getting asked what it’s like to win the FedExCup because as a competitor you’re mad you didn’t win the tournament," Thomas said in a greenside presentation. "I played really well all season. It was a gruelling day for sure and nerve racking. Xander is a deserving champion (of the Tour Championship) and I’m glad to walk away with this (FedExCup)." Spieth finished five strokes off the pace in a tie for seventh, and did not earn enough points to retain his FedExCup points lead. He finished second to Thomas in the standings, collecting a $3 million consolation, while Schauffele jumped to third. "The progression he’s made this year to becoming such a great closer has been phenomenal to watch," Spieth said of Thomas. "It's pretty incredible."
