Monday night’s match with Brentford could be the final time Jesse Lingard plays at Old Trafford after a report shed light on what the future holds.

Manchester United host Brentford on Monday night in their final home match of the season. The Red Devils retain slim hope of snatching fourth spot, though the likely scenario is that the damage has already been done.

Erik ten Hag will take the reins this summer and the squad he inherits could look vastly different to the one he enters next season with.

Indeed, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Paul Pogba are all due to leave as free agents. Nemanja Matic will also leave after the Serbian announced his desire to seek pastures new.

The Sun recently claimed Lingard could yet be given a lifeline in Manchester. They stated club bosses may be able to convince him to stay if guarantees are made over an increased role under Ten Hag.

However, ESPN have dismissed that notion and categorically stated Lingard will ‘say his goodbyes’ to Manchester United fans once the final whistle blows at Old Trafford tonight.

They state the 29-year-old is ‘set to play at Old Trafford for the final time’ as a United player and a free agent exit is now an inevitability.

A move within England is one possibility. Newcastle saw a loan deal collapse late into the winter window. West Ham too sized up a deal after his stellar loan spell under David Moyes last season.

However, according to ESPN, Lingard may have even more attractive proposals from two bona fide European giants.

Italian giants chasing Lingard

The report notes Serie A heavyweights AC Milan and Juventus are ‘leading the chase’ to secure the prized free agent coup.

AC currently top the charts in Italy, while Juventus have recovered from a slow start to sit fourth. Both clubs will have Champions League football to offer.

Lingard is deemed ‘keen’ to try his luck away from United and harbours ambitions of breaking in to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Qatar 2022.

To do so, regular game-time will be a must and impressing in the Champions League would aid his cause greatly.

Lingard’s exit would bring to a close a 22-year stint on United’s books. He has been with the club since the year 2000 and has racked up close to 250 appearances for the first-team.
