Gossip: Luiz 'key to Chelsea Sarri deal', Man Utd 'to pay Van Dijk money' for Alderweireld, Pellegrini 'targets French keeper'

Gossip: Could Maurizio Sarri be on his way to Chelsea in exchange for Brazil man David Luiz?
Gossip: Could Maurizio Sarri be on his way to Chelsea in exchange for Brazil man David Luiz?

Here’s a sexy story about a love triangle involving three powerful Italian men and the bouncy-haired Brazilian bombshell who came between them.

It’s set between London’s fashionable King’s Road and the mafia-riddled Italian city of Naples, where a 59-year-old manager has been replaced by a 58-year-old manager but his club are interested in signing an injury-prone centre-back to complete the deal.

Actually this isn’t very sexy at all, is it? Oh well. Basically, the Express reports that Chelsea are still trying to get Maurizio Sarri from Napoli, but Blues defender David Luiz is “the key” to the deal.

Sarri has a £7m release clause that expires on 31 May, and Napoli will apparently “waive” this fee if Chelsea give them Luiz. Alternatively, the Blues can just wait seven days, which sounds easier.

Plus, the fact the Serie A runners-up have just appointed Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager makes it unlikely they will put up much of a fight to keep Sarri unless they are planning to have two gaffers in charge next season like some kind of footballing Ant and Dec (pre-breakdown obvs).

Meanwhile, the third Italian completing this increasingly underwhelming love triangle, Antonio Conte, is doing precisely nothing while he waits for the Blues to a) sack him and b) hand him a delicious £9m pay-off.

Spurs demand £75m for Alderweireld

Manchester United have officially “opened negotiations” with Tottenham for Toby Alderweireld, says the Mirror. However, the Belgian won’t come cheap.

The Red Devils will apparently have to pay “Virgil van Dijk money” to sign the 29-year-old centre-back – meaning Spurs will ask them to match the £75m Liverpool paid Southampton for Dutch defender Van Dijk in January.

But with Alderweireld able to leave for £25m in a year’s time due to a clause in his contract, Daniel Levy’s bargaining stance may not be as rigid as usual.

United are also “close” to signing the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, and could seal a £52m deal for the Brazilian early next week (Manchester Evening News). This would allow former Fred fans Manchester City to sign the Napoli midfielder Jorginho for a similar fee, with the two clubs set to hold “crunch talks” over the transfer imminently (Sun).

Meanwhile, new West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini reportedly wants to make 26-year-old Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy his first signing at the London Stadium. The Mirror says the Chilean boss is keen on the “highly rated” Guinea-Bissau international who is “one of the most under-rated keepers in French football”. So do they rate him or not??

Elsewhere, Tottenham have joined the race to sign West Brom’s Egyptian centre-back Ahmed Hegazi, who has an alleged £2.5m release clause in his contract (ESPN), Baggies striker Salomon Rondon is wanted by Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid (Sky Sports) and John Terry could sign a new Aston Villa deal that allows him to miss games against his former club Chelsea next season (Guardian). JT is just a big blubbery softie really, isn’t he? Kind of like football’s Gwyneth Paltrow.
