It’s fair to say that Paulo Dybala’s form has dropped off a bit in recent weeks, in the same way you would say that Rolf Harris’ popularity has dropped off a bit in recent years.

The Juventus forward began this season with a phenomenal 12 goals in eight games, but since then has found the net just three times in 17. In Juve’s last couple of league matches he didn’t even make the starting line-up. In the context of the 2017/18 Serie A campaign, it’s a fall of Rolfian proportions.

But rather than being forced to see out the remainder of his days in prison to contemplate his heinous crimes, Dybala’s punishment will instead be a transfer to Manchester United.

The Sun reports that the Red Devils have sought to pounce on the Argentine’s current low stock by lodging a bid of £70m, plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan, for the 24-year-old’s signature.

However, Dybala’s form evidently hasn’t been quite bad enough that Juve are willing to swap him for Mkhitaryan, and they have said no.

But United manager Jose Mourinho is not giving up yet. Having apparently identified Dybala as a perfect alternative signing to Antoine Griezmann, who looks set to join Barcelona, the Special One is tipped to return to Turin with an improved offer.

Juve are said to be seeking “around £86m” and they would prefer it in hard cash rather than Armenian flops.

Saints splash the cash

One team with a lot of hard cash at its disposal next month is Southampton, who are already devising exciting ways to spend the £75m they will imminently receive from Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.

And the first exciting way they have devised is to recreate Roy Hodgson’s first-choice England XI from 2013. The Telegraph says Saints are plotting a move for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, while the Mirror tips the south coast club to swoop for Arsenal’s former St Mary’s prodigy Theo Walcott.

Both fading stars could be signed on loan with a view to permanent transfers in the summer, while Saints are also said to be keen on Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon, Celtic’s Moussa Dembele and Swansea’s Alfie Mawson.

They are likely to face stiff competition for Cottagers wonderkid Sessegnon, who Talksport claims is wanted by Real Madrid (in addition to Man Utd and Tottenham). Real also remain keen on Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Sky Sports says the Blues are “willing to sell” the Belgian if he continues to stall on a new contract.

Elsewhere, West Ham are keen on Borussia Dortmund’s former Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle (Guardian) and Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen (Mirror), Arsenal are preparing a new approach for Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez (Le Buteur – French)

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho believes striker Romelu Lukaku has lost some of his pace by bulking up too much at the gym (Sun). But on the plus side, the Belgian’s pecs are looking absolutely exquisite at the moment.
