Gossip: Wenger 'offered huge China deal', Newcastle 'want Iniesta', Arsenal 'close in on £17.5m defender',

After 22 years of painstaking micro management against a frequent backdrop of austerity and stress, it’s time for Arsene Wenger to treat himself.

A slap-up meal in a posh restaurant could be nice. Or a new pair of jeans, perhaps. Or a good-old fashioned spa day – pedicures, facials, the lot.

But no, let’s think bigger. What about a holiday? Or even better, what about an incredibly lucrative holiday with a little bit of work thrown in? What about earning £24m a year? What about… China?

Somewhat inevitably, the soon-to-depart Arsenal manager is being linked with a big-money move to the Far East. The Mirror says Wenger has been offered a deal to become “the highest-paid manager” in China.

Which, when you consider that Marcelo Lippi currently earns £24m a year coaching the national side – and Wenger would allegedly be paid more than the Italian, works out as a salary not to be sniffed at. He’d be earning more than Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put together.

But Wenger doesn’t have to go all the way to Asia to earn loads of dosh. The Mail – via French website Le10 Sport – says the Frenchman also has an offer to become the “general manager” of Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsene is apparently “friends” with PSG owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the Qatari billionaire is “keen to find a position” for his soon-to-be-jobless Gallic chum.

However, the 68-year-old Wenger is said to prefer more of a “hands-on” role with “day-to-day involvement on the training field”.

In other words, he is simply determined not to treat himself. What can you do?

Gunners swoop for Greek defender

Back at the Emirates, Arsenal are planning a brave new future without their long-serving leader, and they are reportedly keen to make Sokratis Papastathopoulos part of it.

German paper Bild says the Gunners are “on the verge” of signing the Borussia Dortmund defender for £17.5m in a move sanctioned by new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat. Let’s hope Wenger’s successor also rates the 29-year-old Greek.

Meanwhile, Andres Iniesta’s announcement that he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season has already sparked all sorts of crazy offers – such as a move to Newcastle.

The Express reports that Magpies manager Rafa Benitez has “opened the door” for the Spanish midfielder maestro to move to St James’ Park. It’s a door that could be left open for a while.

Elsewhere, Benitez is determined to hold on to Newcastle centre-back Jamaal Lascelles despite interest from Chelsea and Liverpool (Chronicle), Everton manager Sam Allardyce is “unsure” whether to sign on-loan Manchester City defender Eliaqium Mangala on a permanent deal after he made just two Toffees appearances (Liverpool Echo) and Chelsea managerial target Maurizio Sarri has a clause in his Napoli contract that allows him to leave the club for £7m if he is approached before the end of the May (Standard). Alan Pardew should start getting those clause put in his contracts – just for the confidence boost.
