It’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming…. Payet’s right foot’s coming home. To West Ham. Obviously.

As England prepare to take their next step towards glory, the only club side who have ever won the World Cup are today being linked with a sensational move for the only player in recent memory who has come close to sating their delusions of grandeur.

Dimitri Payet, the hero of the Boleyn turned villain of the London Stadium, has reportedly been offered back to the Hammers by Marseille, the same club they signed him from three years ago.

The transfer would say more about the ridiculousness of Marseille than it would about the ridiculousness of West Ham, which is saying something.

The Ligue 1 giants were initially forced to sell Payet for £10.7m due to financial pressures, then re-signed him 18 months later for £25m when they were flush with cash, and now – another 18 months later – are trying to offload him due to fresh “financial pressures”.

The Sun says the Irons board is “considering” the proposal, while manager Manuel Pellegrini has “canvassed the squad” about the potential signing, although any move would be dependent on the French playmaker taking a pay cut.

And despite Payet being abused and pelted with eggs by Hammers fans last year when he refused to play another minute for the club, a poll on the Mirror website suggests most of them – 52% – would “welcome him back” with open arms. They’re such a lovely, forgiving bunch.

Real Madrid fear Ronaldo fan backlash

In Cristiano Ronaldo news, the Mail says Real Madrid have asked their Portuguese superstar to state he was not “forced out” of the club when he makes his seemingly inevitable switch to Juventus.

The Bernabeu hierarchy are reportedly worried about a backlash from supporters if CR7 leaves for a “cut-price” £88m fee, so president Florentino Perez is trying to “stage manage” the transfer by organizing a “ceremonial send-off” where Ronaldo says something along the lines of he “loves Madrid” but he wanted a “new challenge” and everyone else bangs on about how amazing he is. He’d probably like that actually.

Tottenham have been placed on good old “red alert” after long-time transfer target Wilfried Zaha rejected an improved contract offer from Crystal Palace.

The Sun says the Eagles have offered the winger a £125,000-a-week deal, but the 25-year-old wants to have another go at testing himself at a “big club” following his unsuccessful attempt to do so at Manchester United a few years ago.

As well as Spurs, the tabloid says Everton and Borussia Dortmund would also been keen on snapping up Zaha, on whom Palace have placed a £70m price tag to “stave off interest”. That never really works though.

The medical should be completed sometime within the next six months.
