Cricket South Africa (CSA) director and former South Africa captain Graeme Smith talked about leaving former captain Faf du Plessis out of the recently announced national squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 to be held in UAE and Oman from October 17.

Faf du Plessis has declared his desire to play for South Africa in the next T20 World Cup on multiple occasions. Du Plessis is widely regarded as one of the best T20 batsmen on the planet. In 50 T20I games for his country, the right-hander has scored 1,528 runs at an average of 35.53, including a century and ten half-centuries.

He even hit a stunning century for the St Lucia Kings in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) tournament as well. However, he, along with Imran Tahir and Chris Morris, two of the other experienced South African cricketers was not picked in the T20 world Cup squad.

You Have To Find That Balance That Works For Both The Team And The Free Agents: Graeme Smith On Leaving Faf Du Plessis Out

Du Plessis, who had retired from Test cricket in February 2021, is now considered a free agent as he doesn’t have a central contract with South African cricket. Graeme Smith explaining the reason behind leaving the former Proteas captain out of the T20 World Cup squad.

Smith said talks had been held with 37-year-old Faf du Plessis but said it was not possible to reach an agreement with the former captain who is now regarded as a “free agent” as he is no longer contracted to CSA.

“When you are working with free agents you have to come together. You have to find that balance that works for both the team and the free agents. With Faf in particular we struggled to find that balance,” Smith told South African.com.

Smith also talked about considering Imran Tahir,42, for the ICC event and said: “He’s had a great run and he’s still being successful but we’re very confident in the spin bowlers we have available.”
