Gordon Elliott's Tiger Roll is a short-price price favourite to become the first horse since Red Rum to win consecutive Grand Nationals at Aintree.

The diminutive nine-year-old is an unlikely chasing superstar having started his career on the flat in Sheikh Mohammed's Gudolphin stable.

He was bought by Michael O'Leary's Gigginstown Stud for £80,000 in 2014, a won the prestigious and pacy Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in the same year.

Few would have predicted he would take so well to the fences and the longer trips of steeplechasing, but he now has a chance to make history.

Tiger Rolls just about held off the challenge of Pleasant Company, holding on to win by a nose after leading by several lengths a furlong out.

There was a soft ground at Aintree last year however, and the prospect of better ground at this year's meeting will be music to the ears of Tiger backers following his Glenfarclas Chase procession at Cheltenham.

He will be carrying 6lb more this time around however, after the withdrawal of top weight Bristol De Mai.

A horse has not won the National at single-figure odds since David Pipe's Comply Or Die in 2008.

Davy Russell will be riding again and since Brian Fletcher on Red Rum, Leighton Aspell is the only jockey to win-back-to-back Nationals.

Tiger Roll's main challege is likely to come from Gold Cup runner-up Anibale Fly and Rathvinde.
