MythBusters host Grant Imahara has died at the age of 49.

Mr Imahara rose to fame as one of the stars of the science show between 2005 and 2014. He went on to star in Netflix series White Rabbit Project.

He initially worked as an engineer for LucasFilm, before moving on to Industrial Light and Magic, where he spent nine years and worked on the Star Wars film series.

Mr Imahara also worked on blockbusters such as the The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Matrix, and Galaxy Quest.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Mr Imahara died suddenly following a brain aneurysm.

"We are heartbroken to hear this sad news about Grant. He was an important part of our Discovery family and a really wonderful man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family," a Discovery Channel spokesman said in a statement to Variety magazine.

Fellow MythBusters host Adam Savage described Mr Imahara as a "truly brilliant engineer, artist and performer".

He wrote on Twitter: "I’m at a loss. No words. I’ve been part of two big families with Grant Imahara over the last 22 years.

"Grant was a truly brilliant engineer, artist and performer, but also just such a generous, easygoing, and gentle PERSON. Working with Grant was so much fun. I’ll miss my friend."
