Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker has warned Marcus Rashford that “the graveyard is full of indispensable men” amid new contract negotiations.

The England international has been in devastating form over the past few months with Rashford scoring his 25 goal of the season in all competitions in their 2-0 Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle on Sunday.

Rashford has entered the last 18 months of his contract at Old Trafford but there is still no sign of the player and Man Utd agreeing a new deal.

It is understood that he will receive an increase on his £200,000-a-week salary but that the Red Devils are reluctant to pay him more than £300,000 a week.

Rashford had a couple of underwhelming seasons before returning to top form this campaign and former Man Utd defender Parker is worried that the 25-year-old “now thinks he is on top of the world”.

Parker told MyBettingSites: “It is very important that Man United are succeeding with extending Marcus Rashford’s contract because he is scoring a lot of goals.

“But I’m scared that he now thinks he is on top of the world and will be extremely greedy when demanding a huge jump in salary.

“That should not be his focus, his focus should be on his own development because he has the chance to be a hero at the biggest club in the world.

“Things can change really quickly and he got to understand where he was twelve months ago. Erik ten Hag made him a true goalscorer and he should remember that.”

Parker added: “So, I don’t necessarily think that he has the upper hand in the negotiations.

“Where would he go if he was to go to another club? Real Madrid is the only club that would be a step up in the hope of a career increase. They don’t want him and they don’t need him.

“So he needs to be very careful when acting like an indispensable player at the club. The graveyard is full of indispensable men, remember that, Marcus.”

Legendary Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson is keen for Erik ten Hag to find another goal-scoring striker to take the burden away from Rashford next season.

Speaking at the Carabao Cup final, Ferguson said: “I don’t think he’s a striker, he operates really from the left-hand side.

“But fantastic. His finishing is always good. He always keeps his shots down, which is really important for a striker.

“He’s in a great vein of form and unfortunately for us he’s the main source of goals. We could do with an extra one, you know. But he’s doing it for us.”
