Greece players dedicated their shock opener against England in Thursday's Nations League clash to teammate George Baldock, who passed away aged 31 on Wednesday.

The former Sheffield United defender, who earned 12 caps for Greece, was found deceased in his swimming pool at his home in Athens. During Thursday's match, Vangelis Pavlidis fired the Euro 2004 winners ahead four minutes after half-time to stun Wembley.

There were then emotional scenes as the goalscorer took off his black armband in tribute to Baldock, raising it above his head and pointing to it as some colleagues lifted their eyes to the sky. Baldock's Greece jersey was then held aloft by the players.

Both teams wore black armbands during the game, with England also paying respects to Kick It Out founder Lord Herman Ouseley, who passed away last week. A minute's silence was held prior to kick-off for both men.

Initial findings from the coroner's inquest suggest Baldock drowned in his pool. A statement from Baldock's family read: "As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss."

His death has stunned the football community, with employers Panathinaikos releasing a statement upon the tragic news. "We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George," it said.

Baldock's former clubs listed MK Dons, Northampton Town, Tamworth, Oxford United and Icelandic outfit IBV. England goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who was in the squad versus Greece, was a former teammate of Baldock's at Sheffield United.

He took to Instagram to post his own tribute. He said: "Devastated to hear the news today. A friend, great teammate, great player and also a great family man. Sending all my love to all the family. RIP brother."

The Football Association was among many others to send their condolences. A statement said: "We are devastated to learn of the passing of George Baldock at the age of 31. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with George's family, friends and team-mates at club and country."
