Groves: Pogba will outlast Mourinho at Manchester United

Former Arsenal forward Perry Groves believes Paul Pogba will emerge victorious from his row with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Asked on Yahoo’s The Football Show about United’s current travails, Groves admitted he was enjoying the problems at the former Premier League champions. The Gunners legend said: ‘It’s a mixture of loving it and being bored by it.’

‘But if it makes United weaker, which it does, happy days,’ he continued.

‘They’re like a couple that’s divorcing, but are in the house, and neither wants to leave. The kids are suffering: the Man United team, and the Man United fans.

‘Their egos are so big, neither of them are going to back down.’

Groves went on to say that he believes that in the battle between Pogba and Mourinho, it is the Frenchman who will come out on top, because the manager finds himself in unfamiliar territory.

He said: ‘It’s the first time ever that Mourinho has had a player who’s questioned his authority publicly.

‘So one of them’s gonna have to go. We all know one of them won’t be there at the beginning of next season.

‘I think it’ll be Mourinho. If it was Alex Ferguson, he wouldn’t have had to ask for the club’s backing.

‘The club don’t trust Mourinho. They might be thinking have we got a manager now whose powers are waning, whose not the manager they were.’

Groves thinks that the United board would rather get more out of the players currently at the club than with their under-fire manager.

‘You’ve got a player like Paul Pogba. He’s won the World Cup when he’s only 25.

‘And if you were the Man United hierarchy, you’d be thinking we can’t get the best out of him. Mourinho can’t get the best out of Sanchez, Rashford or Martial.’
