Several schools across the Greater Toronto Area have warned parents of technical issues with various video-messaging tools used for online learning that have yet to be resolved.
On Thursday morning schools under the Durham District School Board said in an email to parents that online applications like Google (GOOG) Meet, Zoom (ZM), and Microsoft (MSFT) Teams, are “currently experiencing a significant number of issues reported throughout North America and globally.”
A spokesperson at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) said in an email that it was working with Google to “determine when the performance issues in Google Meet will be resolved for our staff and students.”
“At this point, it’s not known how widespread the issue is,” the spokesperson said. “Educators can use Zoom as an alternative if possible and we’ll continue to provide updates.”
The TDSB spokesperson added that the board shared information about the disruption on social media and “teachers would have shared any issues with parents/guardians.”
The TDSB spokesperson added that other school boards are also experiencing similar issues.
A recent search for all three companies on Downdetector notes that each is facing “possible problems.”
It is unclear how many schools have been affected or if any outages are affecting only users associated with school networks.
Yahoo Finance Canada has reached out to Zoom, Google, and Microsoft but did not get a comment in time for publication.
