Guinea-Bissau vs Egypt - LIVE!

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah got Egypt up and running in their AFCON meeting Guinea-Bissau on Saturday evening.

While Egypt largely dominated and improved on their opening performance against Nigeria, Salah’s excellent volley in the 69th minute proved more of a relief than anything.

Three times they hit the post and did appear to be suffering under a weight of anxiety, particularly given manager Carlos Queiroz had been heavily criticised by national media for his tactics against Nigeria. Before Salah struck, a number of players were guilty of misplacing passes as the weight of the pressure tolled.

Indeed, things could well have been worse had Mama Balde’s stunning equaliser stood. A rocket scored when cutting in from the right-hand side, VAR intervened and ruled it out for a foul in the build-up.

GOAL! Guinea-Bissua 0-1 Egypt | Mohamed Salah ‘69

20:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

69:00 - Brilliant volley from Salah after he drifts free at the far post.

What a first-time finish!

Are Egypt getting nervous?

20:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

64:00 - Hegazi and Kamal are guilty of wasting fairly simple balls in the last few minutes.

Really losing their composure at the minute.

Very poor from Egypt

20:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

60:00 - With the game wearing on, Egypt can’t get into the swing of things.

Are nerves settling in?

Guinea-Bissau change

20:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

59:00 - Ambri off for Jorginho.

Trezeguet on for Mohamed

20:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

57:00 - Guinea-Bissau’s job doesn’t get any easier as the Aston Villa star comes on.

Another free-kick wated

20:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

56:00 - Poor free-kick in a good area for Cande, who blazes it over the bar.

Yet to catch fire

20:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

52:00 - Not a huge amount going on in the second-half so far, although Guinea-Bissau are more in the game than they were at this stage in the first-half.

Egypt patient

20:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

48:00 - Lots of ball for Egypt without much in the way of openings.

Back underway!

HT: 0-0

19:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

Egypt should be in front but Guinea-Bissau growing into the game.

Should make for an exciting second 45!

19:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

43:00 - What a save from Mendes as Salah’s snapshot is steered around the post.

Overhead kick attempted

19:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

42:00 - Mohamed goes for the spectacular but can’t quite find the ball through a sea of bodies.

Game opening up

19:39 , Jonathan Gorrie

37:00 - That, you feel, will suit Egypt.

The front three have given them a much more positive approach and surely with more open space, they’ll have more chance of picking their opponents apart.

19:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

34:00 - Blazed over but still promising to see him getting on the ball more often.

Still arguing

19:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

32:00 - Salah lines up the free-kick while VAR check the foul and everyone argues...

Red card appeal

19:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

30:00 - Encada booked after a foul on Marmoush.

Egypt want a red given he was last man but the referee only produces a yellow.

Good spell for Guinea-Bissau

19:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

27:00 - Very nice spell of possession from Guinea-Bissau.

Really have settled into this game after Salah’s early shot.

Egypt not having it their own way

19:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

24:00 - They might have hit the post twice but Guinea-Bissau are denying Egypt so far.

Solid work so far, it looks like it’s going to take something special to break then down.

Guinea Bissau waste a corner

19:23 , Jonathan Gorrie

21:00 - Awful corner goes straight out for a goal-kick.

History made

19:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

Slight stoppage

19:20 , Jonathan Gorrie

18:00 - Cassama getting some treatment after a foul from Salah.

19:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

17:00 - Egypt hit the post AGAIN!

Salah’s ball causes problems and Mohamed is free in the box.

His strike, however, hits the post.

Poor corner

19:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

15:00 - Somehow, Marmoush falls over while taking a corner.

Not great.

Wayward Salah pass

19:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

11:00 - Salah is perhaps the best player in world football at the moment.

Still, an example there of why he doesn’t play in central midfield just there. Terrible pass!

19:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

11:00 - Cande’s free-kick goes just over the bar but very promising stuff from Guinea-Bissau.

Rare attack from Guinea-Bissau

19:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

09:00 - Some good work in the middle of the park sets Guinea-Bissau away with Camara doing well to play through the lines.

19:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

07:00 - Egypt want a penalty (probably wrongly) after Salah twists and turns into the box.

He falls but, frankly, it was a case of good defending from Guinea-Bissau.

Great atmosphere

19:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - It’s SO nice to hear supporters.

Crowds have been fairly low tournament wide due to the Covid situation in Cameroon but a very nice buzz so far.

Good game so far

19:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

02:00 - Early on of course but the game looks very open.

Salah is isolating his marker 1v1 which, even against the elite club teams of the world, is a dangerous prospect.

19:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

01:00 - Salah shoots from outside the box and hits the post!

Great start, Egypt already look more up for this than in the whole of the Nigeria game.

Salah on the right!

19:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

01:00 - Salah out on the right rather than through the middle...

Your Evening Standard prediction

18:00 , Jonathan Gorrie

As disappointing as Egypt were in the opener, there were signs towards the end of the game that the likes of Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet were starting to get in behind. It would be too much to suggest they finished strongly, although there were certainly signs of life.

Egypt to win 1-0.

Early team news

17:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

For Egypt, Al Ahly midfielder Amr El-Sulya could come back into the side after missing the Nigeria loss with a calf injury.

Ahmed Fatouh, however, will be out after limping off in the opener.

No major changes expected for Guinea-Bissau.
