Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Celtic have already been hit with a double defensive injury setback.

The Hoops kicked off their pre-season schedule last night as a second-string side drew 1-1 away at Ayr United. A mixture of academy youngsters and fringe players were given a chance to shine, with Polish stopper Maik Nawrocki among them. But the defender was forced off midway through the first-half with a calf strain. Nawrocki has been plagued by injury issues since arriving from Legia Warsaw last summer and Rodgers is awaiting the results of his latest blow.

Asked for a fitness update, Rodgers said: "He felt a little something in his calf so we'll just have to see what that is tomorrow."

Meanwhile Rodgers says he'll ease Liam Scales back into the fold after the stopper featured for the Republic of Ireland during the summer. Gustaf Lagerbielke also reported back to Lennoxtown for pre-season training last week but was absent at Somerset Park last night.

The Swedish centre-back - a £3million signing from Elfsborg last season - has been deemed surplus to requirements at Parkhead and is expected to leave in the coming weeks. But Rodgers revealed the defender was unavailable for selection last night due to injury.

He said: "Liam is just back. He was on international duty to Liam so he'll come into the fold for the game next week. Gus had a twist on his ankle and knee in training so he's probably going to be a week out. Matt O’Riley is back in, and a few of the other guys have started to drip feed in, so they’ll come into the game for next Wednesday."
