DORCHESTER Town striker Shaq Gwengwe admitted he has the thirst for more after bagging his maiden Magpies goal against Plymouth Parkway.

Gwengwe had only been on the pitch eight minutes when he chested down Olaf Koszela’s superb chipped pass and rolled a clinical finish past Parkway keeper Kyle Moore.

His goal completed a 3-1 win and ensured Dorchester posted their second victory in as many home games this season.

He was also one of three maiden scorers after centre-backs Kieran Douglas and Callum Buckley netted their first strikes for the club.

Speaking to Echosport, Gwengwe said: “It feels really good. During pre-season I worked really hard to be getting into those positions.

“I’ve tended to provide most of it and I got one goal, providing for my strike partner Alfie (Stanley).

“(Tuesday), all the hard work reaped so I’m happy I scored my first goal for the club and hopefully I can kick on and score more.

“My game is usually playing on the blindside of the defender. Luckily, it managed to fall to Olaf and he gave a great pass. I just took a touch past the defender and slid it home.”

Gwengwe celebrated by removing his shirt and running to the fans behind the goal, where he was duly mobbed.

He added: “I was debating that if I got on a scored, I’m going to be buzzing, I’m going to run into the crowd, nicking the goal to seal it for the boys.

“It was a good feeling. I’m a fan first and I knew they would enjoy that.”

Dorchester are enjoying their best start to a league season since 2015/16 and Gwengwe is relishing his time at the Avenue.

“It is a really good start for the club,” he said. “Last week it was a tough game with the heat and we played loads of games in pre-season.

“We managed to regroup, stick together and get the result. Coming from behind as well, the fans were like the 12th man.

“The fans pushed us and we had the right mentality to get three points. I’m really proud of the boys, it was a whole team effort.

“I’ve heard about the club before and I knew it was such a big club. I’ve worked with Glenn (Howes, boss) and Woodsy (James Wood, assistant) before a couple of years ago.

“I know they like to play expansive football. Our squad is very young and it’s just trying to implement that and play positive football.

“The club is going in the right direction. My first game here, the fans were unbelievable. They welcomed me really well and it feels like home.

“I’m enjoying my time here. I’m obviously disappointed I didn’t start but it’s a team effort and hopefully I can start the next game, get more goals and Dorchester win the league!”
