Hamann takes swipe at Klopp and questions if Liverpool boss is ‘still interested’ in job
Didi Hamann and Jurgen Klopp haven’t always seen eye to eye and the former Liverpool midfielder has taken another dig at the German coach.
Liverpool haven’t looked their usual selves this season as they have been miles off the pace in the Premier League and now the Champions League too.
While Liverpool have struggled to find much momentum this season, the finger has rarely been pointed at Klopp himself because of the stellar reputation he holds.
Hamann has raised his eyebrow at the Liverpool boss though and has questioned if he is still interested in the task at hand.
“I don’t know if the coach is still interested,” Hamann told Sky Germany.
“Because they can only be competitive with a very large investment. In the last transfer periods, they have held back. But this is not going on, at least not successfully.
“Whether he still wants to and stays is probably only decided by Klopp alone. Don’t forget where the Reds were before he came along and what has happened since.
“Titles, reputation in Europe and the way of playing football have been in other spheres since. They’re pretty good up front but [the] midfield and defence need freshening up.”
A rebuild certainly looks to be on the horizon for Liverpool as fresh options in midfield and defence are currently being considered.
Klopp hasn’t always seen eye to eye with Hamann as the manager raised an issue with him back in October.
A journalist had questioned Klopp on his side lacking a spark on the back of what Hamann had previously said.
“Who said that? Oh great, he (Hamann) is a fantastic source. Well respected everywhere,” joked Klopp.
When the journalist reminded Klopp that Hamann is a former Liverpool midfielder, the German added: “That does not give you the right to say what you want, especially when you have no idea.
“I actually think Didi Hamann does not deserve the fact that you use his phrase to ask me a question.
“Do me a favour and ask your own question. That is good. Try to ask a question without using the word spark.”
Liverpool will return to Premier League action this weekend as they face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Klopp’s side had managed to rediscover their form in the league as they made it back to back wins against Everton and Newcastle, but their Champions League loss might have taken the wind from their sales.
Liverpool are seven points behind Tottenham who currently sit in fourth place, but they do have two games in hand on Antonio Conte’s side.
