Hamelin stunned at golden half hour

Canadian Charles Hamelin could not have scripted a better ending to his Vancouver Olympics after grabbing two gold medals in half an hour in the 500m and men's relay in Vancouver.

"I could not have wished for anything better than that," Hamelin said. "I wanted two medals, one individual and one team, and now they are both gold."

"It is impossible to describe what I feel -- I got two gold medals in 30 minutes and it is incredible."

The 25-year-old had endured a frustrating Games until Friday, disappointing in the 1,000 and 1,500 events.

Hamelin's brother Francois added another medal to the family tally as a member of the relay team.

"They will be going crazy in Quebec tonight, they will be going crazy in Montreal, party all night," Charles said. "Our friends will be going crazy."

Charles Hamelin almost missed out on the 500m gold as well after slipping but still managing to cross the finish line off balance.

"I almost fell in the end there," he said after his father and team leader Yves Hamelin admitted to "almost dying" at that moment. Hamelin held on as defending champion Apolo Anton Ohno was disqualified for pushing.

Yves, however, said the Canadians' relay performance was flawless.

"This is absolutely an exceptional day," Yves Hamelin said.

"For that race to happen as it did the planets needed to be aligned," Hamelin said.

"It was a perfect race and even if we tried to script it we could not have done it better. A truly high-quality performance."

As the father of two gold medallists he was also ready to party.

"We have a few bottles of good champagne back in the changing rooms and we are ready to pop them," he said.
