Hamza Igamane is Rangers ready now as Vaclav Cerny reveals helping hand in 'special' moment
Philippe Clement has spent the past four months insisting he’s one for the future.
But Vaclav Cerny believes Hamza Igamane could very well be Rangers’ man for the moment. Thursday night’s dream double in Nice saw the Light Blues’ young Moroccan hitman finally announce himself to the Ibrox faithful six months after making his move to Glasgow. Boss Clement has been keen to hush the summer hype that followed the 22-year-old’s £1.7million switch from FAR Rabat, insisting the frontman would need time to find his feet in Scotland.
It certainly looked that way as Igamane registered just one goal in his first 11 appearances in a blue jersey. But the poacher took a massive stride forward at the Allianz Rivera as he registered two goals and an assist in the 4-1 pounding of the Ligue 1 outfit. Clement walked into the post-match press conference after his side’s stunning victory and again trotted out his line that Igamane has “potential for the future to become an important Rangers player”.
But wideman Cerny won’t be surprised if that future begins now. “It was a special night for him, definitely,” said the Czech, who was teed up by Igamane for the opener on the Cote D’Azur.
“But for him it was also very clear what we wanted to do and you could see the will, the drive and the determination he had in the game. It helped us a lot, obviously.
“We just managed to create what we created. There were not many, many in the first half. But after we took those chances in the first half after that the game was almost dead.
“It was an amazing game for him, but also for the whole squad. You can say it’s important not to put pressure on him, but on the other hand, it's football, it's the top level of football.
“Football life is hard so you need to embrace it, you need to go for it actually. If you have that mindset it's going to be easier.”
Cerny made sure Igamane received the rich plaudits his all-action performance deserved, thrusting the north African ace forward to take the acclaim from the 1800 travelling fans. “That was his moment,” added for Ajax academy graduate Cerny. “Me and Nico Raskin, we just pushed him so he could get his moment with the fans.
“How nice is that? For him it's also important to feel important as he was on Thursday.
“As someone who has this experience coming at an early age, for me it was even earlier, to another country I know how difficult it can be. But he has the will to learn, to be in the conversations, to be willing to be part of the group.
“It says a lot about him and it says a lot about us as a group that we want to integrate him and make him feel part of the group. So we have to help him as well as all the other guys who maybe have little problems with the language or whatever. We're sticking together.”
The resounding victory over Nice was the perfect continental tonic for a team that has been left with a pounding Premiership headache after falling 11 points adrift of leaders Celtic. It will also ease some of the suffocating pressure that has been building on Clement’s shoulders.
It’s appeared at times lately that the manager is existing on a game-to-game basis, with supporters ready to react to any slip-up with a furious call for his head. But for once of late, he was able to saviour a night to remember as a side that has been toothless at home at last found it’s bite in the south-east of France.
Cerny said: “It was a terrific team performance and result. Especially that we stick to the plan that we had.
“It shows that we are a very tough team to play against. The quality we have and if we are this effective in the chances we create. It’s a massive win.”
Gers were in dreamland at the break after ruthlessly taking advantage of Nice’s catastrophic defending to move three-goals up. And they quickly snuffed out the hosts’ faint hopes as Igamane netted his second nine minutes into the second half.
“To be honest, what we said at half-time is to go for the fourth one and kill the game completely,” said Cerny. “If not, think like it's 0-0 and do what we've been doing because it's such an important game. And we did.
“Nights like that are important for everyone, but to be honest, we know where we are in the competition. We are in the Premier Sports Cup final which is coming up. There is another cup to play for soon too.
“The season is long. We are working every day to get it right, to be consistent, to be like this in the competition. Believe me, we're working on it and it's going to get better.”
There remains a major conundrum when it comes to this Rangers team. How can a side so hopeless at home be so competitive on the continent?
But Cerny reckons the answer is simple, saying: “To be totally honest, the games are very different in my point of view. There is no different mindset or thinking within the group.
“We're preparing for every single game as if it was a Europa League final or whatever. Believe me. We've got to get it right in the competition and focus every three days to be better.”
