What has happened to Tottenham forward transfer Ange Postecoglou was 'very near' completing?

A week has passed since Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou said that in the "very near future" Dominic Solanke would be getting help up front in the form of a new signing.

It was last Tuesday, ahead of Solanke lining up against former club Liverpool, that Postecoglou let it slip that another attacker would be helping the 27-year-old out.

"He’s been brilliant for us," Postecoglou said about Solanke. "Hopefully in the very near future we get some help for him and then I think we’ll see him go to another level."

The Tottenham boss was picked up on that last line and asked whether that meant a new signing was incoming or that players were on their way back from injury. He grinned before saying: "Both. It's hopefully what we can do but I wouldn't suggest tomorrow."

With the January transfer window open for 27 further days after the Australian made that comment, the "very near future" comment suggested something sooner rather than later. But a week on, there has been no movement.

Spurs have shown that they can do deals on the quiet these days. Wilson Odobert arrived in the summer, with reports only surfacing of a deal around two hours before it was announced.

A move for goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was then done this month with little talk of it prior to it being confirmed. So it is eminently possible that a deal to sign a forward is close to completion.

Randal Kolo Muani is a name that has been heavily linked with Spurs so far this month, although the Paris Saint-German forward has also been linked with Juventus in Italy. Marcus Rashford is another who has emerged as a potential loan signing, with the forward clearly out of favour at Manchester United. A move abroad looks more likely for him, however.

Those are the only two names that have really emerged as potential signings, but that does not mean a rogue signing is not going under the radar and ready to be unveiled - a la Odobert.

Richarlison is making his way back from injury and Postecoglou intimated the Brazilian would be ready to return to first team action after this week.

"Richarlison is training but we want him to have two solid weeks of training, so if he gets through next week he will be fine," Postecoglou said last week. Spurs visit Richarlison's former club Everton on Sunday and it could be that the frontman makes his comeback against his old employers.

But a new signing is imminent too. Postecoglou is not one to tease a signing if it was not likely to happen. Now seven days on from that statement, football.london would expect an announcement in the coming days...
