Harrah hands Byng team season-opening loss

Mar. 6—HARRAH — Two Harrah pitchers combined to shut down the Byng offense in a 5-1 win over the Pirates in a District 4A-1 matchup Monday afternoon.

It was the season-opener coach Shawn Streater's club, while Harrah improved to 1-1. Both teams battled again Tuesday at Stokes Field.

Byng travels to Little Axe at 5 p.m. Thursday before heading to the Gulf Shores Classic in Gulf Shores Alabama from March 11-14.

The Pirates then return home March 18 to host Bethany in another 4A-1 matchup.

Harrah 5, Byng 1

Harrah pitcher Joey McLaughlin was the winning pitcher. He struck out six, walked three and allowed one earned run through three innings of play. Zac Thompson slammed the door for the Panthers. He struck out nine and allowed just two hits in four shutout innings of relief.

Byng managed just three hits in the game, led by Bo Boatwright's 2-for-3 effort. He drove in the only Byng run of the contest in the top of the third inning that tied the contest at 1-1.

Harrah took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third frame.

Ryan Shelton had the other BHS hit.

Ryan Owens finished 2-for-2 with a run scored in a seven-hit Harrah offense. Cash Flint ripped a triple and drove in two runs for the Panthers and Heath Whitmore slapped a double.

Hagan Graham was solid in defeat for the Pirates. He struck out six, walked three and allowed two earned runs in three innings. Boatwright pitched two scoreless innings of relief and recorded four strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one free pass.
