Harry Kane has come to a massive decision on his future at Tottenham with his deal at the club due to expire in summer 2024, David Ornstein reports.

The England striker’s future in N17 continues to dominate headlines. The subject of two failed bids from Manchester City 18 months ago, he continues to show incredible consistency in front of goal for Antonio Conte’s side. Indeed, he is now just one goal behind Jimmy Greaves’ all-time record of 266 goals for the club. And with Fulham lying in wait on Monday evening, Kane can make history.

However, with his deal due to expire in just 18 months time, speculation continues to linger over Kane’s future.

And the 29-year-old is reportedly one of three strikers Manchester United are considering this summer. Erik ten Hag’s side are seeking a big-name recruit to fill the void vacated by Cristiano Ronaldo. And while Wout Weghorst has arrived in a temporay capacity, Kane is reportedly very much in their sights for a blockbuster move this summer.

To further those prospects, Paul Merson recently came out and told United the signing of Kane can steer them towards Champions League glory.

However, Ornstein has revealed in his latest piece for The Athletic that Kane is actually open to extending his stay at Spurs.

The journalist writes: ‘The striker’s place in their history is in no doubt, but there have been fresh questions about what the future holds after recent reports linked him with a move to Manchester United.

‘Kane has entered the final 18 months of his contract and no negotiations about fresh terms have taken place since August 2021, when a potential switch to Manchester City failed to materialise.’

Three factors can convince Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham

He continued: ‘Following that, the 29-year-old England captain has continued to lead his side’s line impressively and find the target on a consistent basis, which brings his situation into sharp focus again.

‘Kane’s involvement at the World Cup and Spurs’ focus on the January transfer window has limited the opportunity for talks between the two parties of late. But conversations are planned for once the winter market shuts and, if the circumstances are right, he is open to signing a new deal.’

Discussing the factors that can convince Kane to stay at Tottenham, Ornstein insists there are three variables at stake.

‘How Tottenham’s campaign ends – they remain in the Champions League and FA Cup – as well as their recruitment and prospects of success are sure to be key factors. While the offer to Kane will carry obvious importance, Spurs’ plans and ambitions have always been central to his thinking.

It is well documented that Kane’s wish would be to win trophies at Tottenham and he is said to be focused on doing that in the coming months rather than leaving.’

Ornstein is adamant that Kane is very much leaning towards signing an extension. He also insists the striker has not held any talks with his agents over the possibility of a move elsewhere.

‘Although all representatives speak to possible suitors for their players, Kane’s have not held serious discussions over an exit.’

However, with a word of caution, Ornstein adds: ‘If an agreement cannot be reached soon, Tottenham will need to decide whether they look to sell Kane or let their prized asset go into his last year knowing he could depart for free in 2024.’

Redknapp believes Man Utd will target Kane transfer

In his analysis of United’s loss to Arsenal on Sunday, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp reckons Kane would make all the difference.

“They’re well short. They have a centre forward who was playing for Burnley last season in Weghorst. If they want to be serious contenders they’re going to have to go and buy an outstanding number nine to take him to another level,” he told Sky Sports.

“Harry Kane has been mentioned this week, if you want to win titles, that’s the sort of signing you have to be in the mix for.”

However, Ornstein’s update means their hopes of landing Kane may already be over.

Talks over a new deal are likely to be accelerated in the coming weeks. And if all goes to plan, an annoucement may even be made in February.

Ornstein believes Kane is also leaning towards signing irrespective of Conte’s future.

He concluded: ‘The attacker’s stance towards prolonging his career in north London is likely to be welcomed by the Spurs hierarchy and fanbase, especially amid uncertainty surrounding the status of head coach Antonio Conte. The Italian’s contract expires in June, although there is an option to extend.’
