A former England international has questioned whether Harry Kane should captain or even start for the Three Lions, saying he ‘was not even trying’ in the 4-0 loss to Hungary.

It was a dismal international break for England as they drew two and lost two of their four Nations League matches. Draws against Germany and Italy aren’t usually anything to worry about, although England were lacking inspiration in both games.

But England began their Nations League campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Hungary and that was the case again on Tuesday night.

Hungary went even further the second time around, scoring four on a terrible night for Gareth Southgate and co.

They currently sit bottom of Group A3 and are at risk of being relegated to the lower tier of international sides.

Paul Parker, who played for Manchester United and managed 19 caps for England, has blasted Kane’s attitude in the latest match.

“Where was he? He was back on the halfway line trying to be a number 10. England needed a centre forward and he was not even in the game,” Parker told the PA news agency.

“Take Harry Kane off the pitch, he was not even trying. He didn’t even get past a sprint.

Paul Parker suggests Harry Kane should be dropped

“Just because you are the captain it doesn’t mean you can’t be taken off. His season doesn’t suggest that he should be starting to be perfectly honest.

“Harry Kane gets recognition and he’s had a poor season. A player scoring from a penalty spot doesn’t mean you are in form.

“His club form has not been good, his national team form has not been good. You don’t even know he’s out there, to be honest.

“The problem is we haven’t got any other options.”

Kane, like most of his England team-mates, was definitely sub-par during the international break. But one of the main reasons for this will be tiredness.

After all, the goalscorer has just played 50 matches during a gruelling club campaign with Spurs. So four Nations League matches, which are essentially glorified friendlies, is the last thing he and his fellow England players needed.

Kane isn’t above criticism and could have performed far better during England’s recent games. He scored England’s only goal in four outings – which came in the 1-1 draw with Germany – although this was from the penalty spot.

However, it must be noted that all players need a break. And playing in the Nations League isn’t exactly ideal for this. Kane will benefit from a few weeks off now before returning to action with Spurs in their July friendlies.

Meanwhile, a former striker has told Spurs why they should avoid signing Richarlison from Everton.
