Harry Kane is set to undergo a scan on his right ankle just days before England’s second World Cup match against the USA.

The Three Lions captain limped out of the stadium and had his ankle strapped after a heavy challenge by Iran’s Morteza Pouraliganji in the second half of the 6-2 Group B win in Doha on Monday afternoon.

The scan is seen as precautionary rather than cause for alarm.

But there are doubts over Kane’s fitness after he originally came off in the 75th minute of that opening match, to be replaced by Callum Wilson.

England boss Gareth Southgate was confident after the game that Kane was okay, telling reporters: “I think Harry’s fine. It looked like a bad tackle but he carried on in the game.

“We took him off because we felt it was a moment in the game we could do that.”

Kane remains England’s most influential player as he chases his country’s all-time scoring record, with three goals needed to surpass Wayne Rooney.

Newcastle’s Wilson - who did gym work on Tuesday as the rest of England’s non-starters against Iran trained - and Marcus Rashford are alternative options to step into his place against the USA.
