Harry Kane to Manchester United? Solskjaer namedrops Messi and Ronaldo after Tottenham transfer question

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave little away when questioned about Manchester United’s interest in Harry Kane, namedropping Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo after claiming it would be “disrespectful” to talk about Tottenham’s wantaway striker.

Standard Sport understands that Kane has asked to leave Tottenham this summer following another season without silverware in north London.

Manchester City, United and Chelsea have all contacted the England captain’s entourage and Kane’s preference is to stay in the Premier League - and the England striker believes he has a gentleman’s agreement with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to allow him to depart this summer.

Sources close to Kane indicate he has reiterated his desire to leave Spurs in the past month, having requested a transfer last summer but agreed with Levy to stay for another season.

The Spurs chairman is said to have shaken hands on a transfer this summer if Kane still felt the same, amid the hope that Jose Mourinho would help the striker to win the trophies he craves.

But Spurs have gone another season without silverware and are set for consecutive campaigns out of the Champions League, leaving Kane determined to push through an exit before this summer’s European Championship finals.

United have recently tied Edinson Cavani down to a new one-year contract, but the Uruguay star - who scored a sensational chip during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Fulham - will be 35 next February, and has been rotated by Solskjaer this season with the club’s biggest games in mind.

United have been long-term admirers of Kane, and given the pressure the Glazers are facing from fans regarding their ownership of the club and failed European Super League plans, the club’s owners may see signing the Spurs star - or, at the very least, entering the race for his signature - as a way of placating a febrile fanbase.

Following United’s draw against Fulham Solskjaer faced inevitable questions about Kane - but would not be drawn into building what looks set to be the transfer saga of the summer any more.

Asked about United’s plans to sign a striker having tied down Cavani to another year, Solskjaer said: “We’re looking to strengthen the squad, of course, there’s many, many, many things that we have to consider when you put a squad together. I’m not saying that if Edi stays that means someone else in a forward position won’t come in.”

Asked directly about whether he would be interested in signing Kane, Solskjaer told Sky Sports: “I can’t talk about players that are in other teams.

“I think you now me well enough, I don’t think that’s very respectful of any team, any players.

“There’s loads of good players out there: I could say Messi is interesting, and Ronaldo, but I can’t talk about them.”
