Harry Kane has been described as “Tottenham’s greatest ever player” by Jamie Carragher after his goal earned the club a 1-0 win over Fulham on Monday night.

Kane scored on the stroke of half time to give Tottenham a crucial three points after two consecutive defeats. By getting his goal, the England captain equalled Jimmy Greaves’ long-standing scoring record for the club.

The 29-year-old is now on 18 goals for the season and 266 for the club, including 199 in the Premier League. He should surpass Greaves’ tally outright in the coming weeks.

The next landmark in his sights will be to match Alan Shearer as the Premier League’s all-time record scorer, but he has some way to go still.

But with his reliability and consistency, Kane is writing his name in history as “one of the best we have seen”, according to Jamie Carragher.

“It feels like it has gone so quick, but year after year he has delivered,” the former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports. “He’s always there scoring 25 or 30 goals a season.

“We have seen players, and will in the future, who have one or two seasons, but when you think of the greats of the Premier League, the First Division and further before, he is one of the best we have seen, there is no doubt about that.

“At the end of his career, we know he will go past Jimmy Greaves (record), he will go down as Tottenham’s greatest ever player.”

Kane’s goal helped ease some of the pressure on Antonio Conte, who has encountered problems within and outside of football recently.

Conte’s future is unclear, but Kane insists Tottenham’s players are trying to replicate and reward his passion.

“He’s been through a difficult time, I guess outside of football with his personal life, and being part of a team isn’t just the players on the pitch, it’s the manager and the staff and being there for each other,” Kane told Sky Sports.

“We want to win every game for him. He puts so much passion and effort into every game, every training session, and we want to repay him with victories.

“We had a good meeting amongst ourselves and the manager in the week to get back to what we’re good at.

“And we’re going to keep fighting. The manager is a fighter, a very passionate manager, and we’ve just to keep working hard for him.”

Pundit predicts Harry Kane exit

While Conte could leave at the end of the season, so could Kane. His contract will expire in 2024, but Tottenham still want him to renew.

Until he does, though, clubs like Manchester United will be watching on with the hope that they could tempt him away.

During the build-up to the game, ex-Man Utd midfielder Owen Hargreaves suggested Kane might not extend his contract – and that Spurs fans wouldn’t hold it against him.

“He deserves to compete for a Premier League trophy,” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions. “He really does, the Champions League trophy.

“I am not sure he will be completely content with not winning something deep down. I think he would want to stay in the Champions League, as much as Bayern and all these clubs will be amazing for him, I think he will want to stay in the Premier League to break Alan Shearer’s record. And I think he will.

“I think he will want a Premier League trophy to his name. He deserves it.

“Spurs fans would even look at it and wouldn’t begrudge him leaving. The issues the club have consistently. I don’t think Harry can do anything more than he is doing. I am not sure he signs a new contract now.”

But if these are the final few months of Kane’s time with Tottenham, he will want to go out on a high with the club he has given so much for.
