Harry Maguire could look to push a move to Chelsea before the transfer window is out, with one observer explaining why the England star will now be fearing the worst over his Manchester United future.

The England defender came in for plenty of criticism last season as the Red Devils laboured to a sixth-placed finish. As captain, Maguire was expected to set the standard, but struggled for form and came in for scathing criticism from fans and pundits alike. Indeed, Roy Keane did not hold back in his brutal assessment of the struggling defender.

Just a few months later and it seems that criticism was vindicated. Despite a public show of support for Maguire from Erik ten Hag, it seems the new United boss has soon last faith with the player. He was axed from the side to face Liverpool, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane impressing as a partnership.

To add insult to injury, Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo were both told of their fate in a heated team meeting ahead of the match.

As a result, Maguire’s future at United has been come in for some serious questioning. Indeed, the defender was mentioned as a possible target for Chelsea earlier this summer as they look to beef up their defensive options.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are pursuing a deal for Wesley Fofana from Leicester. And while a deal has now seemingly been agreed, they could yet bring in Maguire as well. Chelsea could be willing to say farewell to Trevoh Chalobah, freeing up space for another signing to come into their backline.

To that end, Maguire and a Bayer Leverkusen man feature very much on Chelsea’s wanted list.

Now Maguire may find salvation in a move to Chelsea.

According to pundit Alex McLeish, Maguire will be ‘shattered’ at losing his place in the side. As club captain, that will come as huge embarrassment to the player.

And rather than stay and fight for his place under Ten Hag, McLeish suggests a move to Chelsea could prove the perfect solution.

“Maguire, I still rate him very highly and he could fit in with a lot of teams,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“He’s been linked with Chelsea now which is unbelievable. He’s a human being, he will be shattered [after being dropped].

“He will be shattered like every other person would be. He will be playing mind games with himself. Back in the day, Sir Alex dropped me and I didn’t get back in for a couple of games.

“I was devastated and I can only imagine Maguire isn’t too happy about it either. He’ll be really fearing for his future at Man United.”

Maguire situation needs resolving quickly

As United’s captain and second most costly signing in their history, clearly Maguire cannot continue on the bench. The situation will need some clarification in the days ahead. Indeed, the side that Ten Hag names to face Southampton on Saturday will probably prove telling.

Should Maguire again be left on the sidelines, it could speed up his potential exit.

Whether a move to Chelsea comes around, however, remains open for debate.

That said, a sizeable offer will surely convince United to sell.

Ten Hag’s side need the money to improve other areas of their side. And it seems they are well covered for options in the central defensive department.

Having paid £80m for him from Leicester three summers ago, United will take a big hit on the 29-year-old. That said, he would still likely command a fee of around the £50m mark.

And with United seeing a second offer for Antony fail, the sale of Harry Maguire may come in use in their own rebuilding plans.
