Harry Styles’ stylist sells archive for trans youth charity: ‘The anti-LGBT rhetoric at the moment is horrible’

The mastermind behind pop sensation Harry Styles and The Crown star Emma’s Corrin’s greatest looks has put pieces of his personal collection up for sale on Depop today. All profits are set to go to Mermaids, the British charity supporting transgender youth.

“Worldwide, there is so much anti-LGBT and anti-trans things happening. It’s odd, and it’s horrible,” Lambert says. His work with Styles – which has included putting the singer in a dress for the cover of Vogue, plus fluro-pink feather coats and sequin covered playsuits aplenty – has made waves when it comes to gender-bending dressing entering the mainstream. But the stylist fears the situation for queer people globally continues to regress.

“It feels really like we are going backwards. Everyone needs to be talking about it more, and start being vocal about what’s happening and what’s going wrong,” he says. “I’m a bit guilty of shying away from reading everything that’s going on. But I think what’s happening in America, with them trying to change laws that have been set for so long, it’s really scary. And if it’s happening in America, it’s happening everywhere.”

So, when Depop got in touch to launch a personal shop (@HarryLambertOfficial) he jumped at an opportunity to do some good, dived into his wardrobe, and selected pieces to make money for Mermaids. “The charity is amazing, and it’s a community of people that need help – it was a quick and easy decision,” he says.

His drop went live this morning. There, expect to find a range of one off pieces, glamourous press gifts (yes, that influencer-fave Prada raffia tote could be yours for £1000) and even some Harry Styles collectables: one sold out Beauty Papers magazine, which sees the Watermelon High singer in fishnets on the cover, is up for £80.

“It’s probably one of my favourite shoots I’ve ever done,” Lambert says. “I think they had over a million hits on the website when it went live, and I was even buying copies of it to make sure I had extra.” What made him put Styles in the stockings? We may never know: “I’m not sure I can go too deep into Harry stuff, sorry,” he quips.

Lambert has enjoyed getting to grips with Depop too, scavenging for rare pieces he could not afford to buy when he was climbing up the fashion industry’s ladder. “I’m a bit of a hunter, but I don’t really go to vintage stores because there’s nothing in there anymore,” he says. “I’m constantly thinking about the things I missed out on, so I started searching on Depop and I was actually really impressed.”

But it was clearing out his closet for a good cause that really motivated the sale. And as the trans debate continues to hit headlines during the Tory Leadership race, I wonder if Lambert is leaning towards Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak to win.

“Oh god! People tell me that she’s worse so it’s better if she gets in – then it’s easy to get her out,” he says, with a chuckle. “But honestly, they both seem absolutely horrendous.”
