Sevilla have emerged as a surprise suitor to take Harry Winks from Tottenham Hotspur, who no longer want the midfielder, according to a report.

Winks has only ever played for Tottenham Hotspur at senior level. He was in their academy from the age of five and became a first-team debutant in 2014, at the age of 18. Since then, he has attained a total of 203 appearances for his boyhood club.

However, his gametime has dwindled in recent seasons. Since his contract only runs until 2024, Tottenham have been considering his future carefully.

It was recently reported that Tottenham have told Winks he should start looking for a new club. To sell him, they are holding out for a fee between £20m and £25m.

The 10-time England international will have suitors in the Premier League. Reports have mentioned Newcastle United and Southampton as potential bidders.

However, The Sun have reported that Winks could get an opportunity abroad. They claim Sevilla are looking into a potential deal.

Winks has Spanish grandparents on his mother’s side. Therefore, a move to La Liga may be an interesting one.

That said, The Sun confirm interest in Winks from England, via Fulham, Everton and indeed Southampton. The latter’s interest is a step behind, though, due to their focus on other positions.

Sevilla’s midfield currently consists of Thomas Delaney, Nemanja Gudelj, Fernando, Joan Jordan, Oliver Torres and Ivan Rakitic.

All are good players, but four of the six are 30 years of age or older. Therefore, they may need to evolve their options in the position, even though all still have at least one year left on their contracts.

Winks is perceived as a player with the appropriate technical ability to play in a La Liga midfield. What’s more, at the age of 26, he would become the youngest member of that Sevilla department – yet with plenty of experience behind him.

Indeed, Winks should be approaching his prime years. However, he will need to get back up to the speed of regular gametime to make an impact.

He is unlikely to receive that at Tottenham, where he is behind Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp in the pecking order. Hence, it could be time for Winks – who started nine Premier League matches in each of the past two seasons – to move on.

Heading abroad to Spain may be a good career move. He would also be joining a side with Champions League football on offer with Sevilla.

His characteristics as a player would be a good match for La Liga. What’s more, his family heritage should help him adapt.

More English players seem to be heading abroad to further their careers. It has worked for Tammy Abraham and Chris Smalling at Roma, and for Jude Bellingham (and previously Jadon Sancho) at Borussia Dortmund.

Winks’ former Tottenham teammate Kieran Trippier, now at Newcastle, also spent time in Spain playing for Atletico Madrid. Therefore, a move to La Liga should be something for Winks to think about.

It all depends on whether Sevilla firm up their interest first, though.
