Hassan Childs has been kicked off the South Florida football team, coach Charlie Strong confirmed Tuesday.
The defensive end's dismissal comes after he was arrested on charges forallegedly brandishing his gun at a family of three during a road rage incident late Saturday night near campus, police said.As a result, the man in the other vehicle,Jovanni Jimenez, shot Childs three times.
"I had a chance to speak with him," Strong said, via the Tampa Bay Times. "They all want to continue and go play, and he was a senior, but he totally understood."
Childs, who was hospitalized, is expected to make a full recovery.
The 22-year-oldhas charged with three counts of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.
It's unclear ifJimenez, 26, will be charged in the shooting. He said he was with his wife and 3-year-old son and claimed self defense, fearing for his family's safety.
"When you look at this university and how great an institution it is, and the football program, it is a privilege to represent this program," Strong said. "And there are standards and there are values that we uphold, and our players understand it is an obligation and it is a responsibility to represent it the right way."
