Kapil Dev, former India captain and one of the finest bowlers of his time, lauded current India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who recently broke his record for the fastest Indian pacer to 100 Test wickets. Kapil Dev had reached the 100 Test wickets mark in 25 Tests, but Jasprit Bumrah bettered that mark by one Test and reached the milestone in his 24th Tests, snatching the record in his name.

Perhaps the greatest all-rounder India has produced, Kapil Dev was for years the sole fast bowler India had, especially in the last 1970s and the whole 1980s. He finished his Test career with 434 wickets and over 5,000 runs. He also took 250 ODI wickets and over 3500 runs as well.

Kapil, the country’s first cricket World Cup-winning captain, has lavished praise on Bumrah, calling his achievement sensational, more so because of the pacer’s action and the kind of pitches he has bowled in.

Absolutely Brilliant- Kapil Dev On Jasprit Bumrah Breaking His Record

India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev had held the record for being the fastest Indian fast bowler to 100 Tests wickets for over 40 years but lauded Jasprit Bumrah, who broke it during the recent England Test series which India leads 2-1 despite the fifth Test getting canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.

“Absolutely brilliant. I keep saying that our pitches have become a lot more favorable. That is why so many fast bowlers are emerging in our country. Despite not having their main strike bowler, India have the type who create an impact. This is when Bhuvneshwar is not even there,” Kapil had said on ABP News.

“I would really like to praise Bumrah because I know what it takes to pick 100 wickets on such surfaces, to go with the fact that it’s not easy to bowl with that kind of action. Despite that, he has made such an impact for the Indian team. Hats off to him,” the former captain added.

Bumrah, who made his Test debut in 2018, had quickly become captain Virat Kohli’s go-to man in the longest format of the game. In August 2019, Bumrah became the quickest Indian bowler to pick up 50 Test wickets and the country’s only third bowler to grab a Test hat-trick after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan.

Kapil Dev further lauded Bumrah for how he has acclimatized himself to the rigors of Test cricket and has performed consistently well.

“When he began, we wondered whether he would be able to play Test cricket for India. Of course, he was good in ODIs and T20Is, but ever since he entered the cauldron of Test cricket, he’s been sensational… be it in West Indies, Australia or England. You can say that he is the world’s top bowler,” Kapil added.

Jasprit Bumrah will now be seen in action when the IPL 2021 resumes with his team Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings on September 19.
