Finding a new right-back is a priority for Atletico Madrid this summer – and reports are claiming they could have located one in the shape of Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin.
Bellerin spent the 2021-22 season in La Liga, on loan with Real Betis. It was a productive spell and his time with Arsenal will likely come to an end this summer as a result. However, his chances of returning to the Seville-based side are still in the balance.
A number of other clubs have been expressing an interest in him. For example, there have been links with a move to Serie A. Alternatively, he could find another new destination in his native Spain.
According to the Spanish edition of Goal, one club who could try to take Bellerin is Atletico Madrid. They sold Kieran Trippier to Newcastle in January and are still settling on a replacement.
Diego Simeone’s side have a few options on their shortlist. But Goal claim Bellerin is one of them, and they have even supposedly made contact with those close to him.
Although negotiations have not progressed as quickly in recent days, he is someone to keep an eye on for Atletico.
Also on the Spanish club’s radar are the likes of Emerson Royal of Tottenham Hotspur, Pablo Maffeo of Mallorca, Nordi Mukiele of RB Leipzig, Nahuel Molina of Udinese, and Jonathan Clauss of Lens.
Hence, Bellerin would have far from a free run at joining Atletico if their interest piqued his own. Besides, his preference may yet to be continue with Betis.
But if they cannot get a deal over the line, he will have to consider alternatives. There will be no reintegration at Arsenal, who have Takehiro Tomiyasu and Cedric Soares. Bellerin’s contract there only has one year left to run.
Arsenal will not be accepting lowball offers. However, it looks increasingly likely they will sell the 27-year-old this summer. Whether that is to Atletico or anyone else, only time will tell.
Atletico option would be good for Bellerin
Still at a good stage of his career to progress, Bellerin should give consideration to Atletico if they firm up their interest.
Although he may have become enamoured by Betis, a move to the capital would give him Champions League football. He has not graced such a stage since the 2016-17 season.
What’s more, Atletico’s need for a new right-back would give him a good chance of regular gametime. In the build-up to a World Cup, that cannot be underestimated.
However, any player would want to be playing where they are settled. In Bellerin’s case, if it can happen, that may be with Betis still.
