Thierry Henry has claimed that reported Arsenal target Leroy Sane can be one of “the best in Europe” but the winger needs “killer instinct”.
Sane previously had a spell in England with Manchester City. He joined them from Schalke for a fee that could have risen to £46.5m with add-ons.
The Germany international was a key player for three seasons between 2016 and 2019. He was involved in 20 goals in 31 league outings in 2018/19.
For many Germany-born players, the pinacle for them is playing for Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga giants were consistently linked with him prior to him suffering a serious injury to his ACL in 2019.
After recovering from this setback, Sane joined Bayern Munich before the 2020/21 campaign for a potential total fee of £51m.
Sane was in and out of the team last term and Arsenal were interested in signing him during the summer.
The player’s contract does not expire until 2025 and he impressed on Tuesday night as Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 2-0 in the Champions League group stages.
He scored his side’s second goal as they picked up their second victory in Group C.
Henry praised Sane after this win, claiming that the winger is capable of “being up there with the best in Europe”:
“If he starts to score goals, which makes a difference right, if you see and talk about the chances Bayern Munich had in those games, a lot of the times it was Sane, but he didn’t finish it,” Henry told CBS Sports.
“What I like about his goal is, when he gets the ball from [Jamal] Musiala, the way he accelerated and he didn’t stop.
“Sometimes, his composure in front of the goal, he keeps the same pace throughout the whole opportunity.
“But [in the clash with Barcelona], he gets the ball and accelerates, then you need to slow down a tiny bit, yet it wasn’t the best finish, but he slowed down a tiny bit to finish and, at times, he doesn’t always finish well.
“When he starts doing that, then he will be up there with the best in Europe.”
On whether Sane can reach the levels set by Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, Henry continued: “Yes, and that killer instinct. Ribery was a killer. Arjen Robben, he was there to hurt you.
“At times, Sane would play, and he would play for the sake of playing. You have to want to put up numbers and kill the defender. I see that in his eyes now.
“He’s not the same young kid that was at Manchester City. I think he understood something, but he needs to carry on like that. He needs to learn how to kill and he’s doing that right now.”
