Thierry Henry reckons Raheem Sterling wasn’t happy with Graham Potter in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with RB Salburg on Wednesday.
The Blues remain bottom of Group E with one point from two games after a disappointing result in Potter’s first game in charge.
Chelsea dominated the game without creating a huge number of opportunities, but Sterling gave them the lead at the start of the second half with a precise finish into the far corner.
The England international was operating as a left wing-back and had plenty of space in that unusual position.
But Sterling was taken off with six minutes to go in the game as they chased the win following Noah Okafor’s equaliser.
And Henry believes it was a mistake to take the former Manchester City star off, and reckons the man himself wasn’t happy with the decision.
“We all noticed and we were like, ‘it’s early’ and everything,” Henry told CBS Sports about Potter’s decision to substitute Sterling.
“First and foremost I don’t know why he took Sterling off because he scored and you know he could score another goal.
“It’ll be interesting to see how he’s going to deal with that tomorrow morning because he [Sterling] didn’t look happy.
“Maybe we’re going a bit too much into it, but when they showed him on the bench, I think I wouldn’t have liked to come out after [scoring] a goal, let’s see how he’s going to deal with that one.”
Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher says he was unconvinced by the system Potter used in Chelsea’s draw with Salzburg during his first game.
Asked if he felt Potter’s formation worked with Chelsea, Carragher said: “Not particularly.
“They didn’t win the game, they didn’t create an awful lot of chances, but that’s the way Brighton set up with Graham Potter.
“Any manager who comes in is going to put his own stamp on it, his own system.”
Potter admitted after the game that he was pleased with the attitude of his new players despite the result.
“We’re disappointed with the result,” Potter told BT Sport. “I thought the boys gave everything.
“We scored a good goal, but lost a bit in the second half but their goalkeeper has made some good saves.
“It is what it is, we have to dust ourselves down. Personality and application was good, we will get better.
“It’s always irritating when you concede a goal. Overall the defensive performance was quite good, it’s just the little details we will have to improve.”
