In news that will no doubt be welcomed by Jurgen Klopp and the Reds hierarchy, Liverpool could make a considerable saving on the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig.

According to a report in The Times, Keita’s transfer fee is heavily predicated on performance incentives. The basic fee for Keita is around £48m, but that would reportedly rise to £52.75m were Leipzig to qualify for the Europa League.

The cost of signing Keita would rise again to £59m were Leipzig to qualify for the Champions League, as they were widely expected to do this season having finished as runners-up to Bayern Munich last campaign.

Leipzig are currently sixth, however, and in serious danger of missing out on Europe altogether. Of their last 10 games in the Bundesliga they have won three, drawn three and lost four, which is hardly the sort of form needed to secure a place in Europe.

Should they drop below sixth, they will fall out of the European spots entirely. Eintracht Frankfurt are one point behind them in seventh, while Borussia Monchengladbach are four points behind in eighth with three games to go.

Serious savings

Were Leipzig to miss out on European football, Liverpool would save around £11m on his transfer fee. Were Keita and co. to miss out on the Champions League but qualify for the Europa, the saving would be around £6.25m instead.

Looking up the table, Leipzig are currently four points off Bayer Leverkusen in fourth. That means they would most likely need to win all three remaining league games to turn things around and earn a place at Europe’s top table.

Given that £11m could likely be used to help finance another signing, the Liverpool hierarchy will be keeping a close eye on how Leipzig fare between now and the end of the season. If he wants a welcome boost to his summer transfer budget, Klopp will have to hope that Keita fails to inspire Leipzig to an upswing in form.
