Saka was one of three players to miss a penalty during England’s shootout defeat to Italy in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final at Wembley, along with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, and all three have since been targeted by racist abuse on social media.
The forward will not be involved in this evening’s game, having started his summer break after England’s agonising end to the tournament, but Arsenal staff and players have been quick to rally around the youngster, who was their undoubted star during a difficult campaign last season.
The Gunners are in action in their first preseason game of a mini tour of Scotland against Hibs and prior to kick-off the club shared an image on social media of the two sides’ shirts hanging alongside one another, the Hibs jersey emblazoned with Saka’s name and shirt number.
Despite the absence of their Euro 2020 players, Arsenal still have numerous first-team stars involved at Easter Road, including captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and several of Saka’s fellow Hale End academy graduates such as Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
