Holcomb puts America in front

Steve Holcomb is in pole position to add FIBT World Championship four-man bobsleigh gold to his two-man crown at the halfway stage in Lake Placid – however there is no margin for error.

The Olympic champion joined forces with Steve Langton to come from behind and claim the two-man title in America last weekend but ensured he was first after the first two runs in the four-man.

However alongside Langton, Justin Olsen and Curtis Tomasevic, Holcomb had trailed Maximilian Arndt after the first round – the German No.1 pilot clocking 54.19seconds to the American’s 54.34.

However the tides were turned second time out as Holcomb and his crew posted 54.58 while Arndt and Alexander Roediger, Kevin Kuske and Martin Putze were significantly slower in 54.74.

Holcomb’s lead is only one hundredth of a second though leaving it all to play for in runs three and four while German No.2 pilot Manuel Machata lies third a further 0.27 back on the top two.
