Hollyoaks spoilers follow.
Former policeman Sam Chen-Williams has had a rocky year in Chester, and things got too much in tonight's outing (September 8) of the show.
In scenes aired this evening, Sam failed to convince his family that he was innocent in the recent Zoe Anderson drama and left the show.
Fans of Hollyoaks will know that he is no angel when it comes to Zoe, but events that unfolded recently have him at the centre of a scandal that he wasn't the cause of.
It took a lot, but Sam eventually realised that what he did was unacceptable and apologised and eventually accompanied Zoe to her termination appointment. Zoe was honest with Sam about wanting an abortion after she fell pregnant with his baby, and refusing to acknowledge this only added to his obsession.
Although unable to return to what they had, an olive branch had been extended, and maybe a seed was planted for their future.
However, his world came tumbling down, resulting in Sam leaving Hollyoaks tonight.
But will the ex-cop return to clear his name?
Influencer Rayne Royce has dug her nails into several residents, and tonight, her manipulation of Zoe pushed Sam too far.
Zoe had started receiving mysterious, threatening texts and presumed it was Sam up to old tricks.
It turned out to be Rayne who was sending the messages after stealing Sam's phone.
Things got worse when a picture shrine of Zoe was found in Sam's car.
Rayne started to topple Sam's world, but it was Hunter McQueen who dealt the final blow by staging the former officer's car to look like a creepy tribute to Zoe in a bid to remove him from the equation and Hollyoaks so he could have Zoe to himself.
Despite his best efforts, his pleas of innocence went unheard, and with his family refusing to believe him, he left.

But will he be gone for good?
As a former police officer, he has the detective know-how and skills to solve the case, so by removing himself from the situation, will he be able to watch from afar and unravel the drama?
Hunter could also come to his senses, much like Sam and confess to his part.
Fans will have to watch on to see if Sam will return and prove his innocence.
From Monday, September 25, Hollyoaks will stream first online via Channel 4 each weekday. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
